RÍO Y SAO PAULO – Faced with evidence that the downward trend in Covid-19 numbers in Brazil has been reversed, experts fear that a second wave of cases will come at a time when the country is more vulnerable than in the first wave.

Doctors highlight some reasons for apprehension: mayors (and candidates for public office) who are reluctant to consider the return of isolation measures; trouble data reporting systems; and municipalities with beds dedicated to the reception of demobilized patients.

Part of the fear comes from examples of what is happening in Europe and the United States, where a second wave has forced several governments to close economies that have already been reopened.

In the upper social classes, there is a clear sign of a reversal of the downward trend. The Dasa clinical laboratory network, the largest in the country, revealed yesterday that there was an increase in positive cases of Covid-19, from 18.9% in October to 27.4% in early November.

Even if you exclude data from the public network, the signal is worrying, especially since the demand for diagnostic tests has also increased. “The moving average in the demand for exams grew 50% in RJ and 30% in SP, between October 10 and November 10,” said the company, which has 900 laboratory units spread throughout the country.
