A businessman was arrested by the Civil Police of Santa Catarina on Tuesday (16) on suspicion of selling horse and wild boar meat as if they were beef and pork, in Tubarão. The information is from UOL.
The lawsuit also served a court order to stop the butcher shop where he worked. In addition to the employer, the 2nd Criminal Court of Tubarão determined that the partner-owner of the establishment refrains from carrying out the same activity.
According to the report, the case was discovered after the Civil Police located, in August 2020, a clandestine horse slaughterhouse in Imaruí, 75 km from Tubarão. According to the investigation, the place was kept by the arrested businessman to supply the butcher himself.
The Traffic Crimes Commission and the Environmental Crimes Division (DTCA) sent samples of the products sold in the establishment to the National Institute of Criminalistics of the Federal Police in Brasilia, which confirmed the existence of horse meat and wild boar.
Experts confirmed the fraud using genetic sequencing. Horse meat was marketed as minced meat and wild boar in sausages sold as pork.
The owners of the butcher shop will respond for qualified reception and crimes of consumer orders, and may be sentenced from 7 to 18 years in prison.
