SBT signs contract and officially confirms Libertadores broadcast

SBT closed today (10) with Conmebol the purchase of broadcasting rights for the Copa Libertadores de América for open TV. The news was anticipated by UOL Esporte last Monday (7). The contract was signed this morning by the vice president of Silvio Santos’ station, José Roberto Maciel, and representatives of Conmebol, the highest level of South American football. The first transmission will be between Bolívar x Palmeiras, for the third round of the group stage.

From now on, the Silvio Santos announcer will take steps to build his team. In this operation, SBT has an advantage. As Conmebol is responsible for the technical aspect of the transmissions (equipment, specialists etc), the channel can use more resources to hire professionals in front of the cameras.

The entity already had conditions and values ​​agreed with the SBT.

Globo had a contract until 2022 for $ 60 million a year for the rights to free and closed TV games. But he asked Conmebol to rescind the agreement because he considered the value to be high.

Libertadores is restricted to SBT on open TV, but it also has other vehicles in the subscription business, through Fox Sports, and in streaming social networks, through Facebook. On closed television, Disney already knows what games to play, but it can increase this package because the games previously planned for SporTV have no owner, and she is one of those interested. Facebook, on the other hand, may have lost the game’s exclusivity on Thursday due to schedule changes due to the pandemic, but it still has a package under its ownership, which includes matches from Flamengo and Santos.

At this first moment, SBT does not have the power to change schedules and only inherits what had already been chosen by Globo. But, starting from the knockout phase, Silvio Santos’ announcer will be able to choose the times that suit him best, including the possibility of showing some matches earlier. For now, SBT’s official debut in Libertadores will compete against the match between Corinthians x Bahia, for the Brazilian Championship, on Wednesday (10).

Another point is to close the advertising package for advertisers. SBT Chief Commercial Officer Fred Muller informally searched for names in the ad market to find out what the interest of relevant brands would be in advertising on broadcasts starting next week. The response was encouraging. At least six large companies showed immediate interest. Among them, there are two that closed installments on Fla-Flu do Carioca, which the channel showed in July: PicPay and Ambev.

The information circulating in the market today is that the commercial package will be available “soon”. In addition to its own sponsors, Silvio Santos’ channel will also provide space for Conmebol’s commercial partners, something Globo did not do until then.
