Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello said today that the Pfizer and Janssen vaccines are “contracted” by the federal government. The forecast for the press brake was to close an agreement with the manufacturers until the beginning of this week. The information was given today at a press conference.

According to the schedule released by Pazuello, Brazil will receive, by the end of 2021, 100 million doses from Pfizer and 38 million from Janssen, this immunizer is applied in a single dose.

These hires were made based on the law that was sanctioned last week (…) We completed these hires with everything that was requested in terms of clauses

The announcement comes amid pressure for Pazuello to leave office. The minister himself admitted that Bolsonaro is studying his departure from office, but that he will remain until a decision is made. “The president is thinking of substitution, he is thinking of names,” Pazuello said. Today, the president met with Ludhmila Hajjar, who declined the invitation, and with Marcelo Queiroga, according to information from Globo News.

Pfizer doses will be delivered in monthly batches starting in April:

  • April: 1 million doses
  • May: 2.5 million doses
  • June: 10 million doses
  • July: 10 million doses
  • August: 30 million doses
  • September: 46.5 million doses

Johnson & Johnson, maker of Janssen, will deliver vaccine batches only in the second half:

  • August: 16.9 million doses
  • November: 21.1 million doses

Pazuello also admitted that the schedule may undergo changes: “The planned schedule is going to change. When the manufacturer does not deliver, when the production line is stopped, when there is some difficulty in legalizing the doses,” he said.

Janssen’s vaccine is not yet authorized for emergency use in Brazil, but on January 18 it received a certificate from Anvisa (National Sanitary Surveillance Agency) of good manufacturing practices. Pfizer received approval from Anvisa for the definitive use of the vaccine in Brazil.

In addition to Janssen, the Covaxin and Sputnik V vaccines have contracts closed by the Ministry of Health, but both are not authorized by Anvisa. At the moment, Brazil has been vaccinating the population with CoronaVac and AstraZeneca-Oxford immunizers.

During the press conference, Pazuello also put the vaccination in pulp as the third most important step in the fight against the virus. He stressed that it is an initiative “cross“, not being in third place because it is less important than the others. However, for governors and parliamentarians, this should be seen as a priority for the federal government and not in parallel with the other measures.

“There is no country in the world that has defeated the coronavirus only with an increase in beds, nor richer countries. If we take Canada, Germany, they all needed some kind of distance, it’s Sciences That, ”said the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), during a covid-19 commission in the Senate, in the morning. The speech was defended by the other governors and parliamentarians present at the meeting.

After keeping silent in the debates about the covid-19, Pazuello attended the press conference at a time of decline of the federal government. The same day that Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) met with two possible names to occupy his position, he decided to break the cycle and comment on the portfolio’s measures to combat the pandemic. In the last opportunities to discuss the portfolio, the executive secretary attended the discussions, not the minister.

Pazuello said he would not ask to leave, but admitted that Bolsonaro is studying his replacement in office. Cardiologist Ludhmila Hajjar met with the president this morning but declined the invitation, saying it was a death threat from others. Bolsonaro then met with Marcelo Queiroga, according to information from Globo News.

Anvisa meets with the CanSino laboratory

While the ministry announced the contracts, Anvisa reported that it met today with representatives of the CanSino Biologicals vaccine against covid-19. According to Anvisa, those responsible for the Ad5-nCoV immunizer are interested in taking the product to Brazil.

“The objective was to carry out an exchange of information and guidance with the laboratory on the technical requirements for the authorization of vaccines in Brazil,” the agency said, by note, noting that it has met with all the laboratories responsible for vaccines and drugs against Covid. -19.

Despite the meeting, there has not yet been an official request for the emergency use of the vaccine, which deals only with “requesting information” from the company, according to Anvisa.

According to the developer, the Chinese CanSino vaccine is 65.7% effective in immunizing against the disease.

Pazuello should give a clarification

Previously, the Provisional COVID-19 Commission of the Federal Senate called on Minister Pazuello to clarify the conduct of the federal government regarding the advance of the pandemic. The hearing was scheduled for this Thursday.

Among the main questions, the senators ask for explanations about the support logistic and financial for the maintenance and expansion of ICU beds, considered the second great strategy against covid-19, according to the minister.
