São Paulo continues its agony in 2021. Tricolor drew 1-1 with Coritiba, today (23), in Morumbi, and is increasingly away from the dispute for the Brazilian Championship title. Luciano opened the scoring for Fernando Diniz’s men, while Sarrafiore tied for Paraná in the match that opened matchday 32.
With the result, São Paulo is without victory this year. The three-win, two-draw flashback pushed the team away from the Brazilian leadership and puts enormous pressure on the team that hasn’t won a title in eight years. Before today’s draw, the Tricolor was coming off a humiliating loss suffered at home by Internacional by 5 to 1.
With equality, São Paulo rose to 58 points and is a distance from the international leader. This Sunday (24), however, Tricolor can see Colorado open four points ahead, as they will still face Grêmio in Beira-Rio. Coritiba, on the other hand, completed four games without defeat, but without moving much in the standings. The Paranaenses add 27 points, occupying the penultimate position.
In the next round, São Paulo will try to consolidate the recovery playing away from home. The rival will be Atlético-GO, on the 31st, in Goiânia. Coritiba, who still dream of escaping relegation, play Grêmio, on the same day, at the Couto Pereira stadium.
45 MINUTES WITHOUT IMAGINATION
São Paulo had the best chance at the feet of Daniel Alves in the 45th minute. He kicked from the penalty spot for a good save by Wilson. Before that, moments of inspiration were sporadic. Luciano and Brenner had opportunities in aerial plays, but without offering great danger to Paraná’s goal.
Coritiba did not create great opportunities either, but their objective was clear, with a defensive position and the search for counterattacks. In this way, Nathanael was the player most shot by the right wing. And Coritiba was about to open the scoring in crosses for Matheus Galdezani, who headed in both situations.
CHANGES AND EMPTY
São Paulo returned with changes for the second half. Fernando Diniz yielded defense, with entry from Vitor Bueno instead of Bruno Alves. The Tricolor was slow to come in, but opened the scoring in a beautiful left-side plot. After a table between Igor Gomes and Reinaldo, the ball reached Pablo, who ordered Luciano to shoot first in the left corner.
After that, São Paulo was more willing to attack and had a good opportunity to increase the difference in a play with the two athletes who entered the break. Vitor Bueno took off down the middle and passed Pablo, who on the right side of the area kicked well for Wilson’s good defense with his feet. However, Tricolor still sinned with spaces in defense. In one of these errors, Ricardo Oliveira advanced on the left and found Sarrafiore in the middle of the area. The Argentine kicked hard into the left corner of Tiago Volpi to equalize.
THE BEST
Sarrafiore was one of the Coritiba players who entered the second half and changed the landscape of the match when the scoreboard showed a partial victory for São Paulo. And it was his goal that determined the tie, with a strong left-foot shot without defense for Tiago Volpi.
WORST
Juanfran did not have a night inspired by Morumbi. He was very active in the attack, but the conclusions on goal were not safe for São Paulo. And in one of these advances he left a lot of space on his back that Ricardo Oliveira took good advantage of in the Coritiba goal. The veteran advanced and passed Sarrafiore to declare the tie.
TRICOLOR SOFCO AMBUSHED
Faced with apathetic football in Morumbi, the most shocking news was the ambush suffered by the bus that transported the players from São Paulo to Morumbi. As they crossed the Eusébio Matoso bridge in the Butantã region, fans threw stones and rockets to intimidate the athletes. According to a club statement, 14 people were identified and detained and no one was injured.
LAST MINUTE EMPTY
If the recent problems with the results and the performance of its players were not enough, São Paulo had a last minute embarrassment for the confrontation with Coxa. Gabriel Sara felt bad during the warm-up and did not go up to the start. Tchê Tchê, who had been selected for Igor Gomes’ return to the champions, returned to the team.
TRIBUTE TO THE BROTHER
Author of the first goal of the match, Luciano paid tribute during the match. On his number 11 jersey, he wrote the name of his adoptive brother, Jonathan, who died Friday of cancer.
