The best: Volpi saves in regulation time and penalties
The São Paulo goalkeeper had already helped the team maintain the lead on the scoreboard when the match was 1-0 for São Paulo with at least three important saves. The icing on the cake came on penalties when he converted his penalty and took the Gabriel Dias penalty.
The worst: Paulão loses on the two goals of São Paulo
The defender from Fortaleza had direct participation in the two goals of the Tricolor Paulista. In the first half, he lost at the top to Igor Gomes, who managed to help Brenner. In the final stage he also lost by the head to Bruno Alves, and the ball was left to the top scorer of the night, who did not forgive.
Luan goes back and frees São Paulo
When São Paulo had the ball and needed to propose the game, defensive midfielder Luan retired between the two defenders and released Tchê Tchê and Reinaldo to give the team more space. Thus, the team had more creativity to work the ball in the attack field and involve the team from Ceará. With the advantage gained at the start of the game, the team had more tranquility to exchange passes throughout the first stage.
Fortaleza bets on the counterattack
Coach Rogério Ceni prepared Fortaleza with two lines of four and only Romarinho and David ahead, but all in the defense field waiting for São Paulo’s mistake. Right-back Tinga was placed on the midfield line to stop Tricolor Paulista’s attacks with Reinaldo. Leão do Pici had difficulty exiting the game due to the home team’s schedule and was forced to dispose of the ball during the first half.
Changes make Fortaleza dominate the second stage
For the return leg after the break, coach Rogério Ceni promoted forward Yuri César to replace midfielder Ronald. The forward with the 57 jersey gave the team more speed and left his teammates at least three times in front of the goal; on one occasion, David completed for the back of the net.
Game timeline
At 10 minutes into the first half, Daniel Alves took a corner in the middle of the area, the defense of Fortaleza cut the ball badly and she stayed alive inside the area. Midfielder Igor Gomes passed Paulão from above and the ball reached Brenner. The forward dominated and the volley opened the scoring.
In the second half, at 26, São Paulo expanded with the top scorer of the night: Brenner. Gabriel Sara won on the right wing and crossed the ball into the area. Defender Bruno Alves shared the ball at the top with Paulão, leaving it to Brenner. The forward caught first and scored another beautiful goal.
At 35 ‘into the second half, defender Diego Costa played badly and gave the ball as a gift to Yuri César. The 57 shirt served David, who dominated and hit Volpi’s exit to collect.
Fortaleza reached a tie in the 46th minute with Roger Carvalho. Midfielder Juninho crossed the ball to the defender, who went up alone and headed into the corner, with no chance for Volpi.
Ceni still does not beat São Paulo
Rogério Ceni faced São Paulo for the fifth time since he left the club in 2017. The manager lost the first three chances, all for the Brazilian Championship (two in 2019 and one in 2020). In this edition of the Copa do Brasil, there were two draws: a 3 to 3 in the first leg of the round of 16 and a 2 to 2 in the second leg.
