TABLE
Flamengo started better in the game, having more possession of the ball, but without his main players, he could not create danger for goalkeeper Tiago Volpi. After only defending in the first half, Tricolor relied on striker Luciano’s scoring aroma to secure himself in the Copa do Brasil semifinals after five years.
After the knockout competition, Tricolor will duel with Grêmio from Renato Portaluppi, who dispatched to Cuiabá also on Wednesday. The first leg will be played in Morumbi, on December 23, and the finalist will be defined on December 30, in Porto Alegre.
Look how the game went!
Flamengo better, but without creating danger
The first half was much lower than expected. Concerned about the calendar, São Paulo and Flamengo did not take risks as usual and the game was stalled in the middle of the field. Rubro-negro dominated the actions of the match and went into halftime with 67% of the ball’s possession, but failed to put any real danger to the goal defended by Tiago Volpi. Goalkeeper Diego Alves, meanwhile, watched the game and only made one defense in the first 45 minutes in Morumbi.
Tricolor in front
The monotonous football of the first was in the locker room. With one minute left in the second half, São Paulo managed to get zero off the scoreboard. Daniel Alves found a left center behind Flamengo and Luciano appeared free in the face of goalkeeper Diego Alves to put the ball in the back of the net. The assistant came to invalidate the play, but the VAR confirmed the goal of São Paulino, since the winger Renê was giving conditions.
Luciano’s night
São Paulo jersey number 11 was an inspiring night. After scoring the first showing a great feeling as a center forward in the rival area, Luciano repeated the shot nine minutes later. In a play worked by the left, Reinaldo crossed towards the center of the area, the Flamengo defender gave space and Luciano appeared free to head strong: 2 to 0.
Flamenco hope
Needing three goals to keep qualifying hope alive, Flamengo launched the attack. In a cross in the rival area, Willian Arão climbed higher than Brenner and tried to make the pass from above, but the São Paulo forward ended up deflecting with his hand. The referee scored the penalty and Mengão had a chance to touch the scoreboard, but Vitinho wasted the charge by isolating the ball.
Gold key
Shrunken in defense, São Paulo expected Flamengo to make a mistake to score the third goal. On a passing error by Willian Arão, Tricolor secured a wide victory in Morumbi. Daniel Alves put pressure on the red-black midfielder, the ball was left by striker Pablo, who, although marked by three defenders, entered the rival area and gave him a touch of class to give final numbers to the game.
Account reward
For being guaranteed in the semifinals of the Brazil Cup, São Paulo won a prize of R $ 7 million paid by CBF. Flamengo already received R $ 3.3 million for having secured in the quarterfinals. The champion of the national tournament, which will only be known next year, earns R $ 54 million, while the runner-up will earn R $ 22 million.
