While preparing One UI 2.1 for Galaxy S9 and Note 9, Samsung released a major modification to its software update policy. The change was made this weekend and caught the attention of some users.
That’s because the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus now only you should receive quarterly security updates. As we know, the devices were launched in April 2017. Therefore, they are both 3 years old and should not receive new versions of Android.
With the change posted on Samsung’s official website, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus now only receive updates every three months. There are no other major updates scheduled.
As we can see from the list above, some brokers from the South Korean giant also only receive quarterly security updates. For now, Samsung has not confirmed a possible extension of support for the S8 family.
This is because the company surprised the public by continuing to update the Galaxy S7 line for an additional 10 months. Thus, 2016 devices spent two years receiving monthly security updates and two more years on the quarterly calendar.
Apparently, this policy is also being launched for the S8 line, since devices has guaranteed updates until 2021. This is important and should protect users from major Android security issues.
