A video shared on a social network by the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles, and the vice president, Hamilton Mourão, provoked much criticism from environmentalists.
The video, narrated in English and produced by the Pará Breeders Association, which brings together ranchers from the state, affirms that there is no smell of smoke and that the Amazon does not burn again. Among the images, a golden lion tamarin appears as an example of preserved biodiversity. But the species is only found in the Atlantic Forest, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro and not in the Amazon.
On Thursday (10) Vice President Hamilton Mourão was asked about the error.
Journalist: President, you said that the video is not a government production, right? There were people saying that there is a golden lion tamarin there, that it is not from the Amazon. You came to …
Hamilton Mourão, Vice President of the Republic: That is an integration between the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest, the people of Pará managed to do that, are you okay?
The president of the association responsible for the video also commented.
“They ended up making a misstep, using a stock image of the producer who made the video, which was the image of the golden lion tamarin. But we understand that the most important part of the video is the message it sends and this golden lion tamarin was really a mistake. The only objective was to try to defend the sector, the productive sector, the agro-industry in the Amazon ”, says Maurício Fraga Filho, president of AcriPará.
The executive secretary of the Mico-Leão-Dourado Association, Luís Paulo Ferraz, said that denying the fires in the Amazon is more serious than the misuse of the monkey’s image.
In the first nine of September alone, INPE has already detected 12,000 fires in the Amazon. In 2019, there were 19 thousand in the whole month.
“We see that the image of Brazil abroad is terrible and the question of the golden lion tamarin simply shows that it is a video that lacks information related to reality, it is a symbol of this false communication. Because we can no longer deny that Brazil is not fulfilling its role to protect the Amazon Rainforest. The fires, ”he says.
Video posted by government officials also says that the fires, for the most part, are cultural, of “small proportions” and caused by local populations. But a survey by the Amazon Environmental Research Institute shows that most fires occur on large and medium-sized properties.
“There is a very high probability that everything that has been knocked down and not burned from 2019 until now, will be burned in the next two months. Especially now in September, which is very dry in various parts of the Amazon region. Any action that denies it, especially the official position, is extremely damaging to the country, ”explains Paulo Moutinho, senior researcher at Ipam.
The video was an attempt to respond to another video, published last week by Articulation of Indigenous Peoples, which criticizes burning in the Amazon and links the destruction of the forest with consumption in large cities.
American actor and activist Leonardo DiCaprio posted the video online. With the hashtags: “Desfinancie Bolsonaro”, “Amazônia or Bolsonaro” and “which side are you on”.
On Thursday (10), the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles, provoked DiCaprio. And she invited him to finance a Brazilian government project for the Amazon. President Jair Bolsonaro reproduced the minister’s message.
