The group dedicated to combating the coronavirus pandemic at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) issued a technical note on Monday 30, warning of the accelerated increase in cases of covid-19 in Brazil, especially in the city of Rio. Experts are calling for a series of measures to be taken, including the closure of beaches and the suspension of sporting, social and cultural events.
According to the Multidisciplinary Working Group for Coping with Covid-19 of the UFRJ, the explosion of covid-19 cases occurs without ending the first wave of contagion in the country, which, according to experts, “makes the problem even more serious and complex ”.
“We are facing a very worrying situation in the municipality of Rio,” says an extract from the note issued by the UFRJ team. “The increase in cases is already causing great stress in the health system (…) The seven-day moving average of the percentage of occupancy of beds in the Unified Health System (ICU for adults) dedicated to covid-19 (UCI / Srag – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in Metropolitan Region I is 93.5%. The seven-day moving average of the percentage of occupancy of beds that support the SUS network in the city is 102.1%. In other words, there are no places of hospitalization ”.
The note continues stating that, in these conditions, “the risk of death without the patient being hospitalized is very high”, and adds that “in a short period we are evolving towards the collapse of the patient care network, especially the most serious ”.
In the evaluation of the experts, the new increase in cases of virus transmission occurs after a series of failures in preventive measures. “Many, especially the younger ones, have gathered at parties, bars, beaches and other social events. The electoral process, fundamental for democracy, also generated crowds ”, says the text.
Inadequate public transportation is also contributing to the spread of the virus. “And public statements by government officials saying they will not back down from easing measures add to the seriousness of the situation. It is noteworthy that such measures were not accompanied by actions aimed at offering adequate public transport to avoid overloading, which makes this means of mobility a probable source of spread of the virus “.
