Rio’s public hospitals have intensive coronavirus ICUs and more than 300 patients awaiting a vacancy | Rio de Janeiro

More than 300 people with coronavirus or with suspicion expect a bed from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the city of Rio de Janeiro this Monday (27).

There are no more ICU vacancies for Covid-19 patients in municipal public hospitals, including state and federal.

In the state network, there are only vacancies for patients with this disease in Volta Redonda, Sul Fluminense, at the Zilda Arns Hospital, more than 120 kilometers from Rio. Family members say they were still unable to move.

Outside of several hospitals, refrigerated containers have already been installed where the bodies will be stored until burial. This is the case of Zilda Arns, Souza Aguiar, Evandro Freire and Ronaldo Gazolla.

Each container has the capacity to store 18 bodies.

The measure is to avoid overcrowding in the morgues, according to public authorities. The coronavirus has already killed 677 people in the state.

The public health network has been operating on the edge since last week, as evidenced by the numbers of patients waiting for an ICU:

  • Day 22-269
  • Day 23-220
  • Day 24-230
  • Day 25 – 388
  • Day 26-391
  • Day 27-326

The variation, depending on the state health department, occurs because the patients were discharged or died.

The forecast that the public network would collapse was made on April 14 by researcher Márcia Castro, from Harvard University. In an interview with RJ2, he said that the cases were multiplying.

“What we noticed is that we could have an overload in the demand for hospital resources before the end of the month, around the 24th. From April 24 to 27, depending on the scenario.”

Ricardo Bezerra’s 53-year-old family is proof of the overcrowding of hospitals.

They only had a place in Niteroi after hours of waiting. However, an ambulance was missing. He even made it to the hospital, but died on Sunday.

“But at midnight and a half to get an ambulance, it was very dramatic. We only managed to get to an ambulance that arrived here at 9:20 am. On Sunday it died, destroying people’s souls,” reports relative Fred Gusmão.

Now, the family resumes the saga. Ricardo’s daughter, just 15 years old, has a high fever and is also a suspect of Covid-19.
