The Public Ministry of Rio closed this Friday the 11th the triple list from which the new attorney general will emerge. Directly responsible for the investigation against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (Republicans-RJ), already denounced by the Prosecutor’s Office, the new head will be chosen by the acting governor, Cláudio Castro (PSC), close to the family of President Jair Bolsonaro. The definition will take place in January.
The three names most voted by the members of the organization were, in order: the promoter Luciano Mattos, who had 32%; the lawyer Leila Machado Costa, with 29%; and the promoter Virgilio Stavridis, who kept 25%. Mattos and Stavridis belong to the group of the current attorney general, Eduardo Gussem.
There was a supposed candidate for the competition, lawyer Marcelo Rocha Monteiro, but he had little chance of reaching the final list. He came in fourth place, with 8%, only ahead of the lawyer Ertulei Laureano, chosen by 5%. In total, 904 deputies participated in the election.
Contrary to what happens in the case of the Attorney General’s Office, the Constitution of the State of Rio obliges the governor to choose one of the three from the triple list. However, you can choose the second or third most voted, without official need to indicate the voters’ favorite. Castro has avoided saying whether or not he will accept the will of the majority of the deputy.
Luciano Mattos, the most voted, has a 25-year career within the organization; for three terms he presided over the Association of the Public Ministry of the State of Rio (Amperj). Leila is currently a sub-attorney for Institutional Planning. Virgilio Stavridis now works as chief of staff to the current attorney general, is 27 years old, and has already appeared with Gussem at events.

In addition to directly inheriting the Flávio case from Gussem – denounced for embezzlement, money laundering and criminal organization in the “cracked” process – the new MP will have other sensitive investigations in his hands, albeit indirectly.
One of them, in charge of the Specialized Action Group to Combat Corruption (Gaecc), also involves the presidential clan: it investigates practices similar to those of Flávio, but in the office of councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicans).
