The interim governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PSC), this afternoon ordered the dismissal of Lieutenant Colonel Gabryela Dantas from the position of spokesman for the Military Police. Last night, Gabryela appeared in a video posted on PM’s social media, in which she personally criticized a reporter for the Extra and O Globo newspapers.

His comments were made after the publication of a report that used official data from the corporation itself to show the increase in the consumption of ammunition by policemen from the battalion investigated for the deaths of the girls Emilly and Rebeca, last Saturday. The corporation’s spokeswoman described the journalistic work as “cowardly and unscrupulous,” among other adjectives, in addition to citing the professional’s name and encouraging sharing of the video. His speech sparked a wave of attacks against the journalist.

The class entities and organs that act in defense of freedom of expression expressed repudiation of the policeman’s attitude. The newspapers Extra and O Globo also spoke.

“It is part of the daily journalistic practice to deal with criticism, disputes and requests for reparation of some information. However, Editora Globo repudiates the attacks carried out by the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, which, through an official video, classified the reporter as an enemy of the corporation and encouraged the population to broadcast videos. It is not the role of a state institution to personally attack a professional or incite the population against him “, reads an extract.

Castro made the decision this afternoon, after talking by phone with the battalion commander under investigation with the Secretary of the Military Police, José Rogério Figueredo, who will make the departure official.

The governor was told that the decision to record the video was made by the lieutenant colonel herself. The prime minister must make Gabryela’s departure from office public at the end of the day, through his social networks. Castro must also take a position on the issue.

Since the video was published last night, the acting governor has not yet commented on the attack suffered by the journalist. It is not yet known if the video will be excluded from PM channels.
