SÃO PAULO – Brazilian retail sales grew 0.9% in October compared to September, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) showed on Thursday (10). As a result, the retail level reached a record for the third time in a row, also being 8.0% higher than in February, the pre-pandemic level.

The expectation, according to the Bloomberg consensus, was that retail sales would have risen 0.1% month-on-month after a previous increase of 0.6% and 7% year-on-year, after an increase of 7.3% . in the previous measurement. In the series without seasonal adjustment, compared to October 2019, retail trade increased 8.3%, the fifth consecutive positive rate.

This was the sixth consecutive positive monthly rate since May. The quarterly moving average was 1.4%. Accumulated in the year, retail trade grew 0.9%, after remaining stable (0.0%) in September and falling in the previous five months. The accumulated in 12 months was 1.3%.

In the expanded retail trade, which includes Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, the volume of sales grew 2.1% in relation to September 2020, the sixth consecutive positive variation. The moving average (2.4%) signaled a slowdown in the pace of sales. Compared to October 2019, expanded retail trade grew 6.0%, the fourth consecutive positive rate. The accumulated in the year was -2.6%, compared to -3.6% in the previous month. The rate accumulated in the last 12 months repeated the rate of September (-1.4%).

Retail sales volume in October 2020 maintains the growth path that began in May 2020, after two months of decline due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the series free of seasonal influences, retail trade showed an increase in the rhythm of sales from September to October, highlights the IBGE.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the fifth consecutive positive rate is also the largest variation, in terms of magnitude, in the last five months. Such results contribute to the October 2020 sales level being positioned as the record level of the series, 0.9% above the previous level, the month of September 2020.

The 0.9% increase in the volume of retail sales from September to October 2020, in the seasonally adjusted series, had positive rates in seven of the eight surveyed activities: Textiles, clothing and footwear (6.6%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (6.6%), Office, computer and communications material and supplies (3.7%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, perfumery and cosmetic articles (2.3%), Other articles of use personal and domestic (1.9%), fuels and lubricants (1.1%) and hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (0.6%) had a positive influence on the overall retail result.

On the other hand, the Furniture and household appliances sector (-1.1%) presented a decrease in sales compared to September 2020.

Considering the expansion of retail trade, in October, the sales volume of the Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction Material sectors registered positive variations with respect to September: 4.8% and 0.2%.
