The National Council of Education (CNE) must today approve a resolution that allows remote education in public and private schools in the country until December 31, 2021. In this way, educational networks can organize their calendars, with replacement of the missed classes. evaluations, not just until the end of this year. The document, to which Estadão had access, also recommends that schools do not give students absences throughout this period of pandemic.
As in other resolutions during the pandemic, again a document from the CNE does not recommend failing in 2020. It is suggested that “continuous school years” be adopted, that is, they join the series in which the student is in 2020 with the next, in 2021. “The curricular reordering of the remainder of the 2020 school year and that of the following school year can be rescheduled, increasing the school days and the workload of the 2021 school year to continuously meet the learning and development objectives set in the previous course ”, says the document.
“The consequences of this year will take time to be resolved in the schools,” says the rapporteur of the resolution and advisor to the CNE, María Helena Guimarães de Castro, who was executive secretary of the Ministry of Education (MEC) in the Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Michel Temer . “Even if we imagine that there will be a vaccine next year, schools need to readjust, it is what all the countries of the world are doing. It is a relaxation that gives peace of mind in re-planning for 2021.”
Some public networks have already announced that they will join the two academic courses, as a way of not penalizing students who could not follow education online. One of them is the São Paulo state network, which yesterday opened enrollment for a new fourth year of high school for students who want to continue studying in 2021.
But, according to the Secretary of Education, Rossieli Soares, failure will not be prohibited online. “We know of students who are not delivering activities. We are going to give them all the opportunities, they can deliver later, but the minimum is necessary,” he told the Status. In cases of lack of online access, she explains, students have printed materials and can return lessons this way.
The relaxation of the CNE calendar, however, does not mean, according to María Helena, an indication that classes do not need to return. For her, where there is already a favorable decision in the health area, they must return with face-to-face activities. “The return is very important, even for people to learn to deal with fear, to be welcomed, so that teachers can talk about how they feel.”
Secretary Rossieli also said yesterday that returning, following protocols, is “essential”, citing cases of depression in isolated adolescents. “If possible, send your children to school, safely, whether public or private.” Tomorrow, only 100 of the more than 1,000 public schools in the capital will open, despite the authorization for face-to-face activities.
Law 14.040 / 2020 provided that the CNE should provide guidelines for educational establishments during the “state of public calamity” caused by the covid pandemic. When approved, it will be the most important national resolution on the issue, since the MEC has not officially positioned itself. In an interview with Estadão, the Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, said that going back to school is not a matter for the federal government.
The text also says that it must be up to the parents or guardians to send students to face-to-face classes or not and that assessments are optional for schools at this time. But those who decide to keep their children in remote activities must commit to “activities and assessments.”
Regarding recommending that students should not miss school, María Helena says that it is impossible to verify attendance during the remote class period, since students often receive videos to study at the time they choose. For early childhood schools (0 to 5 years), the document also frees them from meeting the 800-hour teaching load, as primary and secondary education must do this year. Still, these hours can be filled with online activities.
The text also says that all technological resources can be used in education and also mentions social networks, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, “to stimulate and guide studies, research and projects.”
Anxious students
On the eve of the reopening of schools for extracurricular activities, which will take place on Wednesday, parents and students are eager for the resumption and prepared for the new rules imposed by the pandemic. Although they know it will be necessary to keep their distance, the students are happy to be able to kill their classmates.
Pedro Maio Gamarra, 8 years old, already knows what he will take on the first day of school: “My snack, alcohol gel, mask and a glove.” He also warns that he will meet friends again. “The teacher has already said who is going.”
The boy’s mother, businesswoman Taciane de Almeida Maio Gamarra, 38, says the family was preparing to return to school and that the return will bring benefits for Pedro and his sister Giulia, 4.
“My major is stressed, without patience. He really wants to get the uniform and is loving this return from face-to-face activities. It will also be good for them to adapt to how it is going to go forward, ”says the businesswoman.
Those who are going to go back to school next week are also counting the days to regain contact with classmates and teachers, including with the distance rules, use of a mask and alcohol gel. The airplane pilot Gustavo Miranda Leal, 41, has already set aside alcohol gel and additional masks to put in the backpacks of his children Samuel, 8, Sarah and Luísa, 5, and has also stepped up the guidelines.
“They are very anxious, they miss social life. They even asked us, about 30 days ago, about going back to school. What I noticed is that the dialogue worked and the school will take protective measures.”
Siblings Sophia and Theo Larcher, 17 and 12, respectively, will also participate in after-school activities starting next week and are making no secret of their anxiety. “I have high expectations, because I can’t stand being home anymore. I think it’s great to be back for three hours so we can see each other for a while.” Theo’s feelings are mixed when he talks about resuming school activities. “On the emotional side, it is difficult to describe. It is a mixture of nostalgia with anxiety. At the same time that I am anxious to see my friends, I am afraid of the saying of whom (the covid-19)”.
The students’ mother, teacher Melissa Larcher, 46, reports that the return is being more difficult than when the children migrated to remote education due to the pandemic. “There are many doubts. But what we really hope is that they have social interaction. Despite being unsure about the health component – my son is asthmatic – I authorized him to return.” Melissa is committed to information and transparency. “They are happy, they want the school building, but we are preparing them so that they are not the same school.”
The professor of the Singularidades Institute and psychopedagogue, Marta Gonçalves highlights the importance of dialogue and welcome in the process. “No matter the age, you have to talk. We run the risk that the child will go to school and not want to return. She has to accept this disappointment.”
She says it is common to experience anxiety when resuming, but that parents should watch and seek help if the symptom continues.
