Nobody forgets the first victory and Lewis Hamilton won for the first time in his sixth race in Montreal. Starting from his first pole, Hamilton commanded 67 of 70 laps in a four-drive safety event. As that song would say: “I see a new beginning of the era …”.

Even in his first season in Formula 1, the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso had turned into war. At the Fuji circuit it was raining heavily, but the race was played anyway and the Englishman was sovereign under the water, while Alonso crashed against the tire protection. Hamilton kept his hand on the title, but would end up throwing the cup away with mistakes in China and Brazil.

As a Formula 1 star, Hamilton even made a fool of himself during the Monte Carlo race and hit the railing at Curve da Tabacaria, but who knows how he managed to survive in the race. The Englishman then took advantage of an effective McLaren strategy to perfection and even overcame a slow puncture on the final lap to win his first race at Monaco.

Racing at home, Hamilton surprisingly lost pole position to his teammate Heikki Kovalainen. But in the race, in the rain, Hamilton did not notice the Finn and shot for the victory. While his direct title rivals Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen and Robert Kubica rode, the Englishman was so superior in the wet that he won 1m08s ahead of second-placed Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber.

In the balanced and unpredictable 2012 championship, the first six races had six different winners. In Canada, Lewis Hamilton became the seventh winner of the year with a brilliant performance. After running second in the opening laps, Hamilton took fourth for the lead after the first pit stop. Then, he opted for another stop and, with new tires, started with everything in Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso to win.

In his second season with Mercedes, Hamilton effectively became a rival within his own team, friend from the karting days Nico Rosberg. The first direct duel between them took place in the third race of 2014, in Bahrain. The two took turns leading, but in the end, after a safety car, Rosberg had newer tires. Still, Hamilton managed to resist even the flag. It was the start of one of the greatest rivalries in F1.

After taking pole, Hamilton started badly and fell to fourth place, behind Nico Rosberg, Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa. On lap five, the Mercedes driver dispatched the Dane and, five laps later, the Brazilian. The “buddy” chase was relentless, to the point that Hamilton forced Rosberg to make two errors at the chicane at the end of the pit lane. The victory at Monza was instrumental in reducing Rosberg’s distance in the table and consequently putting even more pressure on the German. It worked and the Englishman was a two-time champion.

Already a four-time champion, Hamilton was in a tough battle with Sebastian Vettel for the title. And the weekend at Hockenheim was bad for the Englishman, who had a car problem in qualifying and was only 14th on the grid. But in the race, the reaction was overwhelming: one by one, the opponents were left behind, and when the rain came, Vettel stayed on the road and Hamilton stayed on the track with dry tires. Then he played hard for an epic victory. And the rain fell once after the race …

After following Max Verstappen’s pole position at the start, the five-time champion went on the attack but even left the track. Then, in a clever move by strategist James Wowles, Hamilton made a second pitstop and, with an impressive climb, took 20 seconds out of 20 laps to swallow the Dutchman in the closing laps.
