Almost all regions of the city are hit by a storm considered strong by Civil Defense
A heavy rain with intense winds hits the city of Belo Horizonte on Wednesday night (14). The strong wind is already wreaking havoc in the city. In the Pompeii district, east of the capital, the side walls of the third floor of a residence fell on the neighbor’s house. Despite the shock, no one was hurt.
According to the Fire Department, the walls are new and were erected this afternoon. There are four walls with 2.8 meters each. Two relented. Firefighters go to the scene to assess the damage.
The Barreiro, Oeste, Noroeste and Pampulha regions are those with the highest volumes. In the Central-South and East regions it rained moderately. Hail was recorded in Pampulha and in the Planalto neighborhood, the northern region of the capital.
Near the São Gabriel station, floods were also recorded with the overflowing of the waterfall stream. Due to the storm, the Belo Horizonte Transportation and Traffic Company (BHTrans) asked drivers to avoid Avenida Vilarinho as a safety measure.
The storm occurs exactly one week after Belo Horizonte recorded its heat record: last Wednesday (7), the thermometers reached 38.4ºC, and the date became the hottest day in the history of the city, since 1910, when the measurements of the National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) began. Until then, the highest temperature had been 37.8ºC on the first Saturday in October this year (3). A heat wave like this should not be repeated this year.
Metropolitan region
In the metropolitan region of the capital, in Contagem, it also rained heavily and floods were recorded on Avenida Teleférico. Hail was recorded in Ribeirão das Neves.
