R $ 200 banknote: meet the wolves that will serve as a model for the new banknote
This will be the seventh vote for the Royal banknote family. The Central Bank ordered the Casa da Moeda to produce, until December, 450 million banknotes of the new value.
This will be the first vote for a new royal family value in 18 years. The last ballot, R $ 20, was launched in 2002.
A year earlier, in 2001, the R $ 2 note appeared. Meanwhile, the R $ 1 note was withdrawn in 2005.
In common, the issuance of banknotes has the same objective: to reduce transactions carried out with cash, to save with the printing of paper money.
Another reason mentioned is the need to face the payment of emergency aid, estimated at more than R $ 160 billion considering the five approved installments.
A large number of beneficiaries, especially those with lower incomes, preferred to withdraw the benefit in kind. Only according to figures from Caixa Econômica Federal, up to this Wednesday more than 20 million withdrawals were made.
Director of BC explains how the maned wolf was chosen to seal the 200 reales note
The animal chosen for the new banknote, the maned wolf, was third in a survey conducted by the Central Bank in 2000. The institution asked the population which specimens of fauna they would like to see represented in Brazilian money.
The first place was the sea turtle, used in the R $ 2 bill. The second, the golden lion tamarin, incorporated in the R $ 20 bill.
