PS5 runs all PS4 games, with the exception of 10 games; see list

After a long time without information, Sony revealed today (09) several details of the backward compatibility of PS5 games with PS4. According to the company, virtually all PlayStation 4 games will work with PlayStation 5, in addition to their respective accessories. Additionally, the company also revealed that selected titles will have Game Boost, a feature that increases performance and frame rate.

According to Sony, the entire library will be backward compatible, but some games may have unexpected bugs and not all features will always be present. Below you can see the list of games that will NOT be compatible with PS5 (and can only be played on PS4):

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Kuma’s Revenge Volume One
  • Isle of Man TT – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just deal with it!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: the journey
  • we sang
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

What PS4 controls and accessories work on the PS5?

All PSVR titles can be played on PS5, but you will need the PS camera (the one from PS4) and an adapter to connect it to the new Sony console (which is not necessary to buy). The company also revealed that DualSense, DualShock 4, and licensed third-party controls will work for playing PS4 games on PS5 (but the company recommends that these games be played with a DualShock 4 for the best experience). To adjust the vibration of the joysticks, players can access the PlayStation 5 menu to choose the best suited option.

Steering wheels, PS Move, PlayStation VR Aim Controller, Gold / Platinum headsets and other peripherals also work with compatible titles, just like the current video game.

How to run a PS4 game on PS5?

The backward compatibility of the console will work similar to what we currently see on Xbox One and there aren’t many secrets. If you want a game that you have in your digital collection, just follow these steps:

  • Choose the desired game in your game library
  • Download the game (if you haven’t downloaded it yet)
  • The game will be installed and playable (in some cases, it will be playable as soon as certain parts of the download are complete, just like what we see on PS4

If you have the physical disc for a PlayStation 4 game, here are the steps:

  • Insert the game disc into PS5
  • Finally, install an update so it can run on PS5
  • Leave the disc inserted in the console to play

It is possible to transfer saved games from PS4 to PS5 using the transfer functionality over WiFi, as well as install titles on an external hard drive.

Compatibility limitations with previous versions of PS5

As Sony reported, not all original PS4 features are included when playing on the PS5. The Share menu, which is used to capture and share videos and images, will not be visible during playback (but the player can still press the Create button in DualSense or Share in DualShock 4 to capture screenshots and videos – by pressing the button once the creation appears, pressing and holding the command captures an image, pressing the button twice starts or stops the recording).

The HD camera on the PS5 will not be compatible with PlayStation 4 games, which require the PS Camera, the original accessory for the console. In addition, the HDR mode of images is always enabled by default and, if the player wants to disable it, it is necessary to access the console menu and turn it off manually.

And finally, PS4 exclusive features like tournaments, live in game, and second screen through the app, will not work on PS5.
