The extension of emergency aid and the extension of the state of public calamity until March 31, 2021 were proposed in a new bill (PL) by Senator Alessandro Vieira (Cidadania-SE).

According to the senator, there are already conversations with other parliamentarians about the initiative, but there is not yet a forecast for its inclusion in the Chamber’s agenda.

The bill presented by Senator Vieira proposes that the deadline for emergency aid and a state of public calamity, scheduled to end together, on December 31, 2020, be extended until March 2021 due to the economic impacts caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus. Above all, still, that the pandemic continues and that vaccination will take an indefinite time to conclude.

“The fact is, due to the inertia of the federal government, we simply will not have a national vaccination program before March. It is necessary to build this bridge to maintain the minimum of social stability until then ”, said the senator.

The parliamentarians will try to vote on Wednesday, December 16, the Budget Guidelines Law (LDO) directly in the plenary session of Congress. Later, the congressmen will have to return to their bases for the holidays.

The emergency aid, approved in March in Congress, was initially paid for 3 months in the amount of R $ 600 to the so-called vulnerable. Subsequently, the benefit was extended for another 2 months, with the same value. Finally, in September the benefit was extended in 4 more installments until December 2020.

The Federal Government arrived and stipulated the creation of a new permanent income program, with values higher than those paid by Bolsa Família, but so far the issue has not been incorporated.

What the Government says about the extension of emergency aid

This week, President Jair Bolsonaro reconfirmed that the emergency help it will not spread. In addition, the chief executive confirmed that a new income distribution program will not be created and stated that the idea is to “slightly increase” the current Bolsa Família assistance program.

According to Bolsonaro, the aid paid to vulnerable people by the crisis caused by Covid-19 is of an urgent nature. According to him, Brazil has the capacity to borrow and cannot be “unbalanced.”

“Whoever talks about Renda Brasil, I will give him a red card, there is no more talk,” Bolsonaro said in an interview with the presenter of the TV Band José Luiz Datena. Renda Brasil was the program planned by the Government to replace Bolsa Família.

“The aid is emergency, the name itself says it: it is emergency, we cannot continue to signal that it will spread and spread and spread,” said the president, adding that “it ends in December.”

When referring to the fact that now the focus will be the Bolsa Família, Bolsonaro confirmed what he has been saying to the economic team: “We will try to increase that a little.”

The president also argued that the country has to keep its accounts to avoid rising inflation, “the most damaging tax that exists for everyone,” he said.
