A group of protesters has been protesting, since 3 pm on Friday (20), in the center of Belo Horizonte, against the death of João Alberto Freitas, João Beto, in Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the Military Police (PM), the man was beaten to death by employees of a subcontracted company, which takes care of the security of the supermarket chain. The assaults began after the customer, who was shopping with his wife, argued with a supermarket employee.

Ten minutes after the start of the protest, the doors of Carrefour on Avenida Afonso Pena on the corner of Calle Guajajaras, which were open, were closed. Around 3:30 pm, there were already about 100 people in the act.

The act features the slogan “Our lives are important! Stop killing us!” and it happens on the Day of Black Consciousness. The protest, organized by the Núcleo Rosa Egípciaca Negros, Negras y Indígenas, obtained the support of at least 14 Belo Horizonte social movements and political parties. Rapper Djonga is among the protesters.
“This is not an isolated case. It has happened every day since Brazil is Brazil. Today was supposed to be a day of celebration and we woke up with news like that,” Djonga said G1.
He also commented on the note sent by Carrefour after the death of João Beto:
“If they thought that what happened was wrong, they would change, but the cases are repeated. They spend a lot of money on inclusion marketing, but in practice, we see that the discourse is different,” he said.
Around 4 p.m., the protesters were heading towards the other Carrefour store, on São Paulo street.

Upon arriving at this Carrefour store, the protesters decided to enter, around 4:30 pm, with war cries like “I can’t breathe. Stop killing usThis store, which is located inside the Cidade shopping center, was open when the protesters entered. The Military Police remained outside.

Carrefour said in a note that it deeply regrets the case, that it has launched a rigorous internal investigation and has taken steps to ensure that those responsible are legally punished.
The network, which attributed the assault to the security guards, also described the act as criminal and announced the breach of the contract with Vector, a security company that is responsible for the assaulted employees. (See the full note at the end of the story.).

According to Luiza Datas, general coordinator of the DCE UFMG and member of the Nucleo Rosa Egípciaca, the protest is a symbolic act, with peaceful political interventions and slogans. denouncing the genocide of the black population and structural racism.

Carrefour informs that it will adopt the appropriate measures to hold those involved in this criminal act responsible. It will also break the contract with the company responsible for the security guards who committed the attack. The employee who was in charge of the store at the time of the incident will be fired. Out of respect for the victim, the store will be closed. We will get in touch with the family of Mr. João Alberto to provide the necessary support.
Carrefour deeply regrets the case. Upon learning of this inexplicable episode, we initiated a rigorous internal investigation and immediately took the appropriate measures so that those responsible are legally punished. We do not allow any type of violence and intolerance, and we do not accept situations like these from happening. We are deeply shocked by everything that happened and we will follow the evolution of the case, offering all the support to the local authorities.
