The spokesperson for the Military Police, Lieutenant Colonel Gabryela Dantas, was exonerated after a video in which she attacks and describes as “liars” the reports of journalist Rafael Soares, from Extra and O Globo. The video was posted on Twitter by the Secretariat of the Military Police. The dismissal was at the request of the acting governor, Cláudio Castro.

“You cannot play with freedom of the press,” said the acting governor.

Even with the resignation and dismissal of the spokesperson position, Lieutenant Colonel Gabryela Dantas remains as an officer of the Military Police. The publication with the video, which called for action, was taken off the air on Wednesday afternoon (9).

On the morning of Tuesday (8), the newspapers Extra and O Globo published the article “Ammunition consumption soared in the battalion of PMs investigated for the murder of girls in Duque de Caxias.”

In response, the spokeswoman for the Secretariat of the Military Police, Lieutenant Colonel Gabryela Dantas, said that the corporation was surprised “with a lying story”, which, “maliciously, suggests that there was an increase in the consumption of ammunition by a battalion of PM ”, which was involved in the death of cousins Rebeca, 7 years old, and Emily, 5 years old, in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense, last Friday (4).

He also argued that the unit’s ammunition consumption has not changed significantly and represents less than 10% of the consumption published by the journalist who subscribes to the report.

In the video, the official still says that the journalist wrote the article “taking advantage of a national commotion to turn the population against the Military Police.”

Class entities, such as the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) and the newspapers O Globo and Extra, repudiated the attacks on the journalist.

In a note, the Globo publishing house, responsible for the Extra and O Globo newspapers, stated:
“It is part of the daily journalistic practice to deal with criticism, disputes and requests for redress of some information. However, Editora Globo repudiates the attacks carried out by the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, which through an official video described the reporter as an enemy of the corporation and encouraged the population to spread the video. It is not the function of a state institution to personally attack a professional or incite the population against him ”.

“The figures shown in the report are contained in a document prepared by the Duque de Caxias Military Police battalion, called the Munitions Map. This record is prepared every two weeks by all PM headquarters. The report, supported by said documents, obtained by the journalist, listened to and recorded the version of the Military Police on the data ”.

According to the report, the amount of ammunition used in November, when compared to that registered in the fortnight of July, is three times higher. And, if compared to the one registered in September, it is 75% higher.
