Vatican News did not report the date of the new nuncio’s arrival in Brazil. Until now, Giambattista was the highest representative of the Catholic Church in India and Nepal, where he has been since 2017. D’Aniello, for his part, will go to Russia.
Giambattista Diquattro was born in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on March 18, 1954. In addition to being an archbishop, he is a diplomat, theologian and canonist, according to “Vatican News.” He has a master’s degree in civil law from the University of Catania and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, as well as a master’s degree in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was ordained a priest in 1981 and joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on May 1, 1985.
The new Brazilian nuncio served in diplomatic missions in the pontifical representations in the Central African Republic, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Chad, in the United Nations, in New York and, later, in the Vatican Secretariat of State and in the Apostolic Nunciature in Italy.
Before India and Nepal, Giambattista Diquattro was Apostolic Nuncio of Bolivia, where he remained from 2008 to 2017, appointed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. From 2005 to 2008, he held the highest role of the Church in Panama, appointed by Pope John Paul II.
