A corporal from the São Paulo State Military Police (PMESP) drowned in his spare time while trying to save four children on a beach in Itanhaém, on the São Paulo coast. The group is said to have been washed away by the waves. In the rescue attempt, Diogo Gomes de Melo, 31, ended up drowned. The case was registered this Tuesday (12/29).
According to the corporation, the officer was on the beach with relatives and heard the children calling for help. He went to the sea to try to rescue him, but ended up being swept away by the current. He was even rescued alive by the Fire Department, but ended up dying. The children were rescued by other swimmers who were at the scene.
In note, PMESP mourned the death of the corporal. “The military policeman worked in the 13th Metropolitan Military Police Battalion, in the central region of São Paulo, he had been in the Military Police for 11 years and 6 months. He leaves a wife and has no children, ”he says. Corporal PM Melo was part of the “Operation Summer” Military Police and was working in Mongaguá.
President Jair Bolsonaro used social media to lament the episode and said he would participate in the burial of Corporal Diogo, whom he called a hero. “His gesture seems to have been instinctive. A great loss for all of us, for our Military Police. I am sorry for what happened. This afternoon I must go to his funeral. We are making contacts with the family. It is our life. Really, a hero, right “He gave his life for the lives of some children who bathed in that place,” he declared.
