On the night of Thursday 8, a military policeman (PM) was arrested in flagrante delicto for killing, with four shots, the companion in a car, on Silas Munguba Avenue, in the Serrinha neighborhood, in Fortaleza. The victim called her mother shortly before she was killed and said that the prime minister was “crazy” and very “upset.” The police had provisional arrest on Friday the 9th.

Manuel Bonfim do Santos had lived with Ana Rita for about two years. According to a relative of the victim, who will not be identified for security reasons, Rita was afraid to relate, but Bonfim made her trust and fall in love with him.

“I had never seen her so happy in a relationship (…) She believed that she would never meet anyone because she thought that men were very macho, but she saw it as good,” said the relative. Also according to the report, Bonfim gained the trust of the victim and moved to his house, where the daughter Ana had in another relationship, a girl only 11 years old, and her mother also resides.

Another relative of the victim pointed out that the relationship he had with Bonfim was worthy of a “soap opera”, assuring that they planned life together and that no family member of Ana Rita imagined the “tragic outcome” that the story had. However, the man was armed and was drinking, which worried some close people.

Last moments of the victim

According to a relative who lived a long time with Ana Rita, Bonfim is in the process of divorcing his ex-wife, with whom he has a 15-year-old daughter. The teenager’s birthday was celebrated the night of the crime, the day the man would also sign the documents of their separation.

That day, however, Manuel informed Ana that he would not sign papers and that made them fight. After having dinner with Bonfim’s daughter, the couple allegedly left the girl at home and, along the way, started a new conversation.

According to the report, the police called Ana Rita’s mother and asked her to pick her up while they were at the restaurant. Halfway there, the woman called the victim and learned that Bonfim was “crazy”, very “upset”.

When Ana Rita’s mother crossed Silas Munguba, she already found the avenue closed, with her daughter’s body fallen into the vehicle itself. At this point, Bonfim had already been arrested on the spot by the police, being taken to the Women’s Police Station in Fortaleza and charged with femicide.

On Friday afternoon, a preliminary report from the Civil Police (PC), delivered by the relatives of the victim to the THE VILLAGE, revealed the violence of the action and Bonfim ordered the provisional arrest by the Judiciary. According to the document, the man fired four shots in the woman’s head, one of them at point-blank range and crossing the eye.

“The whole family is in shock. Everyone is very scared. Everyone is very angry with another case of femicide. We never expect it to happen within his family. We want him to answer for what he did and to be recognized as the crime that was” What it was a femicide ”, highlights a relative.

“She was very good, kind, nice, very communicative, cheerful, a person who did not deserve such a tragic outcome. The family is upset with this situation. How do you shut up the words with bullets? Use the gun? ”Asks another family member, excited.

The “danger” lives inside the house

In the photos made available by Ana Rita’s relatives, Bonfim appears several times with her, with her relatives and pretending to be someone “very dear” to everyone. In those images, no one seems to suspect that the prime minister could commit the crime for which he was responsible.

This shock faced by Ana Rita’s relatives, however, is a reality for many families. According to Jeritza Lopes, public defender and supervisor of the Center for Confronting Violence against Women of the Ombudsman’s Office of Ceará (Nudem-DPCE), most crimes of domestic violence are committed by the victim’s partner.

“We have to understand that the fundamental cause of domestic violence is machismo. This ideology of domination makes men feel free to commit any type of aggression against women (…) The home should be the place of protection, but unfortunately it is the place where women are most at risk ”, highlights the defender.
