The PlayStation 5 (PS5), Sony’s new video game, hits stores in some countries around the world this Wednesday (11). Although it only arrived in Brazil on November 19, TechTudo was able to test all the functions and performance of the console, and counts the opinions in terms of visuals, general operation, control, system and cost-benefit. The review also brings the main improvements compared to the PS4, such as the function to optimize the cooling system and avoid the noises that the predecessor made.

See below the final impressions of the new device, which will be sold in the country for the price of R $ 4,699 in the standard version (or R $ 4,199, in the model without input for discs). Remembering that, to test, Sony sent the PS5 to TechTudo in the version with blu-ray input.

The PS5 did well to change its design so much. After all, that understated rectangular black look on the PS4 came from the PS2, that is, he was already 20 years old. With the redesigned white design with shiny black accents, it was very pretty and modern. Like a console to open the doors to a new generation of technology.
On the other hand, Sony lost some sense when building the new PlayStation, and opted for a very large video game (39 x 26 x 10 cm, remembering that the common PS4 was 30.5 x 27.5 x 5, 3cm), and very heavy, at 4.5kg (vs. 2.8kg for PS4). Remembering that the Xbox Series X, rival of the console, has the same weight, but a much more compact size: 30 x 15 x 15 cm. With that, don’t wait for a video game to be brought to a friend’s house in your backpack, the PS5 will look great inside the house.

Another slightly strange point is the blu-ray input of the PS5. The device, when placed in a vertical position, needs a large area next to it to place the disc, which is very uncomfortable. When lying down, the entrance is easier to handle.
In terms of control, the big DualSense also has a modernized look, like a futuristic version of the DualShock 4. And it fully combines with the console itself, forming a very striking and imposing pair.
The system, in general, maintains a similar interface to the PS4, with similar controls and storage. However, it was quite modernized and now looks much more elegant and clean. The background music itself, which gives way to that loud and repetitive sound from the previous console, is now a much quieter and less noticeable background sound. In terms of appearance, it provides a darker background with an illuminated texture and is customized every time you hover over a game or application.

Also, it’s worth noting: the PlayStation 5 system is much faster and better to use than its predecessor. Commands are always responded to at the same time and actions happen quickly, as if you were swapping out that old, troubled computer for a new, state-of-the-art machine.
The PS Store also seems much lighter and more fluid, finally. The store experience was never very good in previous video games and it frustrated the gamer very much with crashes, crashes, and restart needs. Okay, the console hadn’t been launched yet during our tests, so there was much less chance of the server getting overloaded or something. But, in a first experiment, the entire PSN proved to be very good to use.

Another cool thing to see: the games install and run very fast. When installing the two blu-rays from The Last of Us – Part 2, it took about 10 minutes for the system to copy the entire game and open it. All very fast. And the most interesting: it makes practically no noise. It’s certainly a lot quieter than the PS4. When playing a DVD movie, even some of those gag, but also without being as garish as the previous model.
According to Sony, the console’s cooling system would have an update over the PS4 and PS4 Pro, which in addition to getting very hot, had very noisy coolers. The company says it uses sensors to measure the temperature of the console, using that data to optimize its performance and heating.
As said before, the PS5 is quite fast and powerful. When browsing through it, you already realize that it is a cutting-edge device and ready for the next few years: it is agile, it does not crash and it responds to everything quickly. And the best: in games this performance is repeated equally. It is capable of running very heavy games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Last of Us – Part 2 with little load, without choking on any scenes and without seeming to overload the console (do you want to go back to the home screen? press the button and you will immediately be there).
The great good news in this is being able to count on the evolution of games in the coming years. If cutting-edge PS4 games run so light on the PS5, it’s great to imagine what the games will look like so that console performance peaks. Furthermore, with the ray tracing technology included in the device, the forecast is to see more and more details in the graphics.

DualSense works great too. Firm and very responsive, especially the touchpad, the controller is one of the best ever. Its battery lasts much longer than the DualShock 4, with about 10 hours of moderate use (some games, some downtime, etc.). On the other hand, it is good to warn: although the directional pad is very similar to the one on the PS4, during testing, for some reason, the rubber hurts a lot on the finger – perhaps because it is new, or made of a different material.
The main features of PlayStation 5 are backward compatibility with PS4 games and the ability to stream images to a TV in 8K or 4K at 120Hz. Although we still don’t have a way to test the second feature, we were able to take a good look at how game sharing works between consoles and it’s flawless – you won’t have any problem playing your old games.
Whether it’s installing a PlayStation 4 disc or downloading a game, the transition is very smooth. Even playing Fifa 21, available for both video games, you can switch between both consoles directly, only with the EA / PSN account.

Now, who really brings differentials is the DualSense control. The accessory came very neat and packed with many cool features. With the highly evolved control vibration experience (you now feel many different intensities of shake, in addition to the vibrations of “walking” through the control), you can practically feel things for the control: the tactile simulation that Sony had promised. It is very exciting to be able to play with these possibilities, being able to surprise you with the control at any time.
Other features of the joystick, like the breathing sensor and the ability to yell or talk to it, also work very well. And while they seem a bit silly for everyday life, it opens up a range of opportunities for future games. Will any developer see a revolutionary way to use this?
Finally, the new PlayStation includes Wi-Fi connection differentials in various standards (being able to finally connect its 5.0 Ghz network, not available on PS4), 825GB internal SSD, three USB type A outputs (standard) and a USB-C . The DualSense control is also carried out using a cable with a USB-C type output.

Considering the high dollar in 2020 and the price of other expensive devices, such as the new iPhone 12 (R $ 6,999) and the Macbook Pro 2021 (which comes for R $ 17,299), it is even surprising not to have come for higher values. In addition, the PS4 itself was launched in Brazil for R $ 4 thousand in 2013, which was really a very high value, until the console began to be manufactured in Brazil in 2015, and its price dropped to R $ 2,599.
With all that in mind, the PlayStation 5 is well worth the price. It’s a high-end device, which should be on the market for the next 8 years and has a lot of wood to burn. However, as we said in our review of whether the PS5 is worth buying in 2020, it should take another year or two for the console to be “essential.” Until then, the prices can change and make the game even more attractive.
