SÃO PAULO – After months of preparation, Pix, the new instant payment system created by the Central Bank, will begin operating this Monday (16) for all citizens of the country.
The promise is to offer a more secure, competitive and faster payment method, with financial transactions in up to ten seconds, which can be carried out seven days a week, 24 hours a day, even on weekends and holidays, in addition to make it possible to carry out transfers by writing only the cell phone, CPF or email – the famous Pix codes – and payments through QR codes.
Keys are nothing more than a way of identifying the user within the Pix ecosystem. They function as your account address in the new system, or an account “nickname,” as defined by the BC.
QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes, the little squares that were known during the life of the quarantine. In practice, the user must enter the application of the financial institution and scan the code with the smartphone camera to make payments.
Both natural persons and legal entities will already have access to the resources of the system through their respective financial institutions and will be able to make transfers, payments and collections of amounts as of today. There are 762 financial institutions authorized by BC to participate in Pix.

Accession
The first announcements about Pix were made by the Central Bank in February 2020, but the system has started to gain more popularity since the registration stage began, on October 5 of this year.
A Google survey of 750 people shortly after registration began, between the 5th and 8th of last month, showed that 70% of those interviewed said they know or have heard of Pix, but only 35% already had conducted the survey. key registration until then.
For 25% of the people who registered, the main reason that led them to register the password was a communication from the bank by email or application, which shows the importance of digital education for knowledge of the new system, according to the survey. Google. In the period in which the survey was conducted, at the beginning of October, around 21 million keys were registered in Pix.
The most recent data from the Central Bank, published on Sunday (15), show that the system has reached the benchmark. 71.3 million registered keys. Of this total, 30 million keys were registered by individuals and almost 1.8 million by legal entities. It should be remembered that each individual can register up to five keys per account, while legal persons have a limit of 20 keys, also per account.
It is not possible to repeat the same key for different accounts, since as the CPF, CNPJ, cell phone or email will act as the delivery address of the securities, the system would not identify to which account to transfer the value.
CPFs were the most chosen key option, representing almost 26 million of the 71.3 million registered, followed by cell phone (17 million), email (12 million) and random key (almost 14.7 million).
Results of the restricted phase
After opening the key registry on October 5, Pix began operating in the so-called restricted phase between November 3 and 15. During this period, financial institutions selected part of their customer base to test available resources and correct any errors.
During this phase, also called soft opening, the data show that Pix has been gaining ground: on the first day of testing, 2,345 transactions were made between accounts of different institutions, totaling R $ 210.2 thousand; Last Friday (13) 288,401 transactions were carried out, also between different bank or fintech accounts, which together exceeded R $ 118.3 million.
It is important to say that during this period the institutions began testing with a maximum of 5% of the total client base and then they were able to expand to a percentage of 15% or even more, depending on the choice of the institutions.
In the accumulated of the restricted phase (until 10 am on Sunday), 1,749,079 transactions were carried out, which totaled around R $ 734.4 million in financial volume traded between accounts of different institutions in the country, according to the BC .
A second stage of the Google study, conducted between October 19 and 21 with 500 respondents, shows that, even with the possibility of registering up to 5 keys, in the case of individuals, and 20 keys, in the case of individuals 45% of the respondents preferred to register only one Pix key.
“The Brazilian is still trying to understand how the transactions using Pix will work and what he gains from the new system. For this reason, people may be waiting for the start of operations to register new keys ”, says Natalia Souza, specialist in financial information at Google Brazil.
