Pernambuco decreed a statewide quarantine, from Thursday (18) to March 28, to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. The measure published on Monday (15) determines the prohibition of the operation of commerce considered non-essential, bars and restaurants, beaches, parks, as well as face-to-face classes in public and private schools and universities. The decision was made during a meeting of the state government’s Monitoring Committee. The meeting began at 9 a.m. and the measure was announced shortly after 3 p.m. Quarantine does not alter vaccination schedule against Covid-19 in Pernambuco.
This is the second time such restrictive measures have been adopted in Pernambuco. The first time, the quarantine was 15 days, for five cities of Greater Recife, in May 2020. Now, the quarantine is valid for the entire state.
During the quarantine period, the following services are prohibited: bars and restaurants; shopping malls and shopping arcades; optics; movie theaters and theaters; gyms; beauty salon and the like; retail trade of clothing, footwear, electronics and white goods, bed, bath and table items and haberdashery, as well as schools and universities (public and private).

Clubs and social and sports associations are also closed; beaches, parks and squares; leisure cycle lanes, in addition to the prohibition of sports practices and competitions; and cultural, leisure or social events.
Churches and other religious temples can be opened for administrative activities and for the preparation and holding of celebrations via the Internet. Speaking on the internet, Governor Paulo Câmara (PSB) claimed that the state is experiencing a new spike in the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It is necessary to reverse this trend to protect each life and win. We have adopted new social and economic measures that seek to reduce the impact of the pandemic, even in the face of a crisis that also affects the government, ”said the governor.
The start of this new quarantine in Pernambuco occurs one day after the end of the period of restrictions on non-essential activities, which were imposed by the state government from March 3 to Wednesday (17).
According to the Pernambuco government, essential services, which can operate during quarantine throughout the state, are the following:
- Supermarkets
- Bakeries
- Pharmacy
- Gas stations
- Pet Shop
- Clinics, outpatient clinics and the like
- Banks and lotteries
- Public transport
- Industries, wholesalers and thermoelectric
- Civil construction
- Construction materials
- Computer equipment and supplies
- Agricultural material and equipment warehouses, workshops and technical assistance and vehicle warehouses

Pernambuco confirmed, on Monday (15), 921 cases and 28 deaths from Covid-19 (see video above). With these new patients and deaths, the state now has a total of 318,449 infected with the new coronavirus and 11,411 deaths caused by the disease, figures that began to be registered on March 12, 2020.
