The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, said on Friday (11) that the emergency authorizations for the use of vaccines against Covid-19 are not the solution to face the pandemic. Pazuello also said that he will personally charge Anvisa (the National Health Surveillance Agency) more quickly.
The UK and Canada have already granted emergency authorizations for the use of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, and the US should give the green light later on Friday or in the next few days for the same immunizer.
Vaccines with this authorization can only be applied to specific groups of the population, such as the elderly or health professionals, for example, and cannot be used for mass vaccination of the population.
During the inauguration of the Célia Câmara maternity hospital, in Goiânia (GO), the Health Minister affirmed that no vaccine against Covid-19 received the definitive registration from health agencies around the world.
“What we are seeing in England is an emergency authorization for use by restricted groups and with a signature of individual responsibility in a very serious, very controlled way. That same emergency authorization was issued yesterday in the United States. “But that is not all [autorização emergencial] which we consider as a solution. The solution will be the registered vaccine, the safe vaccine and distributed to the entire Brazilian population. We will not pass the responsibility on to those who will receive the vaccine. The responsibility lies with the authorities that are offering the vaccine, free of charge and voluntarily. “
The day after Anvisa employees published a letter stating that they are not subject to political pressure and that technical work is above any pressure, Pazuello said that he will personally demand more speed from the agency.
The minister said that the vaccination forecasts are directly linked to the registrations and authorizations that the agency will grant.
“I will personally charge Anvisa for the speed, within all responsibility, within all security. But I will seriously charge for Anvisa to be faster, as fast as possible in giving us a record, giving us the necessary authorizations for its use. “
Once again, Pazuello changed the discourse on the acquisition of vaccines. The Ministry of Health had been defending that it could acquire any vaccine that was safe and effective and that it obtained the Anvisa registry.
On Friday, however, Pazuello said he ordered his subordinates to raise the funds to buy all the vaccines available in the country.
“Today, I have certain meetings in Brasilia so that we can find the necessary resources to purchase all the vaccines, to vaccinate all of our people,” he said. “I also determined that we have contracts, initially non-binding, but already contracts, memoranda of understanding, with all vaccine manufacturers that are available in our country. This is happening ”, he added.
Brazil currently has around 370 million doses guaranteed to be delivered in 2021. Most of them are part of the technological order made with the company AstraZeneca, in partnership with the University of Oxford.
100 million doses of this vaccine are expected in the first half of next year. With the technology transferred to the Brazilian Fiocruz, 160 million doses will be produced in Brazilian territory in the second half.
In addition to these amounts, Brazil joined the Covax Facility consortium to purchase 40 million doses from any of the participating laboratories. This week, the country also signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 70 million doses of the immunization produced by the American Pfizer in association with the German BioNTech.
Without mentioning names, the Health Minister indirectly criticized São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) and said that no state will have an advantage over the others.
Doria announced the start of vaccination in the state on January 25 with the Coronavac vaccine, a partnership between the Butantan Institute and the Chinese Sinovac.
“Anxiety is part of it, it is created by the Covid-19 situation itself, the risks, the severity of the contamination. It is caused by the accommodation of some authorities in the country, ”he said. “It’s part. But the federal government will know at the right time to clearly position itself, as it should, to maintain unity and maintain the standard for all of us. Our national immunization plan is national. No state in the federation will be treated differently, no Brazilian will have an advantage over other Brazilians. “
