Eduardo Pazuello, Minister of Health, announced today the purchase of 68 million doses of vaccines against covid-19 that have not yet been approved by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency). At a press conference, he presented a schedule that predicts more than 562 million doses still in 2021, but many deliveries have already been delayed.

The minister has also lowered the vaccine distribution forecast four times in March alone. Also in February, Pazuello projected the distribution of 46 million doses by the end of the month. On March 4, the number increased to 38 million. Then there were predictions of up to 30 million, “between 25 and 28 million” and, in the last week, there was talk of “between 22 and 25 million”.

The planned schedule will be changed. When the manufacturer does not deliver, when the production line is stopped, when there is some difficulty in legalizing the doses.

In the vaccine contracting schedule, there were purchases of 20 million from Covaxin, 10 million from Sputnik V and another 38 million from Janssen, developed by Johnson & Johnson.

None of the three had a record approved by Anvisa so far. According to the regulatory agency itself, in a panel updating the progress of vaccine tests, Janssen has not yet requested emergency use in the country and still needs to provide research data.

The panel does not show the status of Covaxin or Sputnik V.

In the case of Sputnik V, developed by the Gamaleya Institute in Russia, and imported by the União Química laboratory, there are representatives who mediate direct negotiations with Anvisa.

Covaxin, developed by the Precis Medicamentos laboratory, will be discussed at a meeting scheduled for tomorrow at the regulatory agency. There is still no request for emergency use in the country.

In 58 days of vaccination, the government immunized only 4.61% of the population with the first dose of vaccines available in Brazil: CoronaVac and AstraZeneca, both requiring two applications. Only 1.69% of Brazilians received the two necessary doses against the coronavirus. The survey is the consortium of press vehicles of which Twitter it is part of and collects data released by state health departments.

Exchange in ministry

Although he declared that the event was a routine presentation of actions to combat the virus – and not an assessment of his management – Pazuello admitted that President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) is evaluating other names to take over the Ministry of Health. Columnist Carla Araújo, cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga, has already accepted the invitation.

Dr. Ludhmila Hajjar, who said she had rejected the application, had already been summoned. Government officials tried today to create the narrative that “there was no formal invitation.”

“Dr. Ludhmila is a doctor of great credibility. The attacks directed at her are unfair. The information on the decline of the invitation does not advance due to differences between her and the PR. It was not done,” the Minister of Communications wrote on social networks , Fábio Faria.

Other government officials interviewed by the column said Bolsonaro’s main point of resistance was the disclosure of some public positions of the doctor on social media.
