The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, instructed the mayors to use the entire new batch of 4.7 million vaccines against the new coronavirus for the application of the first dose. The rationale is that there is a guarantee that new batches will be produced. Currently, the two covid-19 vaccines distributed in Brazil, CoronaVac and Oxford / Astrazeneca, require two doses.
The information was released by the FNP (National Front of Mayors), which met this morning with the minister, and was confirmed by the ministry. The delivery of new lots is delayed and yesterday generated a public exchange of picks between the Ministry and the Butantan Institute, which produces CoronaVac.
Pazuello told mayors that he will change the vaccination strategy and that the new doses should be applied to 4.7 million Brazilians, and no more than half that number. The Ministry expects to receive this batch of vaccines between next Tuesday (23) and the beginning of March. There are 2 million doses of Oxford vaccine and 2.7 million of CoronaVac.
Currently, there is no rule for the application of doses, each municipality prioritized the risk groups and the way to vaccinate. There are places that chose to vaccinate more people with the first dose, other places divided the batches so that each patient had the two doses guaranteed. The risk groups also vary in each municipality.
In addition, there are two types of vaccines that are used for immunization: CoronaVac, developed by the Butantan Institute in association with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac, and Oxford / AstraZeneca, distributed by Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz). The correct thing is that the patient receives both doses from the same laboratory.
Application of the second dose
According to a note from the Ministry of Health, the second dose of Butantan will be applied 14 to 28 days after the first, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The folder stated that it will receive 21 million Butantan vaccines in March, “which should guarantee the second round of immunizations.”
“The AstraZeneca immunizer, on the other hand, has a longer application time than the second dose, with a period of up to three months. The laboratory must make available another 18 million doses produced in Fiocruz and imported next month” , reported. in a note.
In a note released about the meeting, the Health Ministry did not make clear whether municipalities waiting for new vaccines to apply the second dose could use the new batch for this, or if they would be required to apply everything as a first dose. Generally, the ministry makes guidelines for use, but the decision on how to use it is up to each municipality.
This week at least five capitals registered a lack of vaccines.
During the meeting, the mayors asked the ministry to invest in advertisements to publicize the vaccination. The demand will be analyzed by the portfolio. THE Twitter showed in December that the government of Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) reduced advertising spending for vaccination campaigns.
Priority request for teachers
Likewise, according to the FNP, the minister promised that “all necessary, enabled and used beds will be paid for. No one will be left with a bed without being able to use it and without receiving it to use.”
The mayors ask Pazuello to prioritize teaching professionals in the immunization strategy. According to the FNP, the minister guaranteed that he will adapt the PNI (National Immunization Plan) to include them as soon as possible, probably until March.
“I argue that, after reaching an age where the danger of contagion is decreasing, we can make adjustments to include education professionals in general. We have been in this situation without classes for a year and it is undeniable: no matter how much public power It may be that to make adjustments, a middle or upper class student has more facility to study than a poor student. This situation cannot be accepted, ”said Jonas Donizette (PSB), president of the FNP, shortly before the meeting.
