The number of hospitalizations for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Paraná is approximately three times higher since March 2020 than that registered in the same period of previous years, according to InfoGripe data, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

According to monitoring, more than 1,800 people were hospitalized with respiratory syndromes in Paraná between March 1 and April 11. On average during the previous two years, 442 SARS admissions were recorded: 502 in 2019 and 383 in 2018.

(REVIEW: G1 was wrong to report that the number of hospitalizations was four times higher in 2020. In fact, there are three times more hospitalizations since March 2020. The information was corrected at 7:25 am)

InfoGripe collects information on all people hospitalized with respiratory diseases in the country.

Covid-19 under-registration

The increase points to the possibility of not reporting cases of coronavirus, since the same survey indicates that 173 hospitalizations were for people with a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19.

“It can be inferred that this difference from the beginning of March refers to Covid-19,” said the president of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (OSI), Clóvis Arns da Cunha.

The profile of hospitalized patients with respiratory syndromes reinforces this possibility.

In 2019, the elderly represented one in five people hospitalized with pneumonia in Paraná. In 2020, one in three patients are elderly, according to InfoGripe.

  • Paraná hospitals have around 3,700 respirators, says Sesa

“It matches the profile of Covid-19 patients progressing to a serious condition,” said the SBI president.

The G1 He contacted the State Department of Health (Sesa), but received no response until the publication of this report.

Unspecified deaths

According to data from the influenza epidemiological bulletin published by Sesa, from March 15 to April 17, Paraná had 229 deaths from “unspecified respiratory syndrome.”

The number represents 77% of deaths from respiratory syndromes in the state in the period.

According to the coronavirus bulletin published by Sesa, 42 deaths had been confirmed the same day with a diagnosis of Covid-19.

In the year to date, the number of deaths from unspecified syndromes is at least three times higher than in previous years, according to the bulletin data.

According to SBI President Clóvis Arns da Cunha, tests for the identification of Covid-19 can have up to a 40% diagnosis of “false negative”, which may explain the difference between confirmed cases of the disease and cases not specified.

“These are probable cases of coronavirus that would depend on a second test to have tests,” he said.

According to the doctor, with the arrival of new rapid tests distributed by the Ministry of Health to state departments, it will be possible to reevaluate patients with symptoms of Covid that laboratory tests indicated as negative.

According to the Sesa bulletin of Monday (20), 9,500 laboratory tests were carried out in the state and 8,000 were negative and 447 are under investigation.

The same situation has been registered in other states of Brazil. In four weeks, Rio de Janeiro had more hospitalizations for respiratory syndromes than in all of 2019.

In Minas Gerais, the number of deaths from SARS has increased 265% since the beginning of 2020 compared to the same period last year. The number of hospitalizations for the syndrome increased further, equivalent to 388%.

In Maranhão, eight deaths from respiratory syndromes were recorded in March 2020. In the same period of 2019, one death was recorded.
