Another state in the Southern Region of Brazil has taken more drastic measures to combat the covid-19 pandemic. After Santa Catarina announced the closure over the weekend, the Government of Paraná also decreed closures for the next few days and extended the curfew.

All non-essential services must be closed as of midnight today. They won’t be able to reopen until March 8 at 5 am. Face-to-face classes in schools and universities will be suspended during these 9 days. In addition, there will be a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am. In other words, driving on public roads is prohibited at this time.

Other restrictive measures were also announced in various sectors: suspension of elective surgeries for 30 days for public and private units; religious activities will work only with individual service or online worship; there will be a teleworking regime for state agencies.

Governor Ratinho Junior (PSD) admitted that Paraná is in the worst moment of the pandemic, with a significant increase in deaths from covid-19 and a high occupancy rate of beds in hospitals.

The worst number of hospitalizations was recorded yesterday, with 3,376 hospitalized patients. In total, since the start of the pandemic, Paraná has registered 628,999 cases and 11,380 deaths, according to the state’s Sesa (State Department of Health).

In addition to the restrictive measures, the state government announced the opening of 99 ICU beds and 153 clinical beds in all regions of the state. He also promised to increase inspection, so that everything is duly carried out. The governor said he is analyzing how fines and even arrests will be applied to organizers of underground parties.
