According to data published today (7) by the Ministry of Health, Pará surpassed Maranhão in the number of official cases of covid-19 and became the sixth state with the most records in the entire country. In total, Brazil already exceeds 135,000 infected and 9,000 dead from the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Pará increases to 5,524 cases and 410 official deaths from covid-19, while Maranhão represents 5,389 cases and 305 deaths. The states are in the regions of Brazil where there was an acceleration of the diagnoses of the disease in the last month: proportionally, the cases in the northeast are equivalent to 31.2% of the total in the country, while the north has 15.8% .

According to the Ministry of Health, São Paulo continues according to the largest focus of covid-19 in the country: there are 39,928 cases in the state. Then Rio de Janeiro appears (14,156 cases), then comes Ceará (13,888), Pernambuco (10,824), Amazonas (10,099), Pará (5,524) and Maranhão (5,389).

However, in the accounts of the Department of Health of Pará, the numbers are higher than those indicated by the Ministry of Health: 5,709 confirmed cases (and not 5,524), and 438 deaths from covid-19 (and not 410). The figures published by the portfolio had been published yesterday at the state level (6).

The capitals of Maranhão and Pará instituted a closure this week. São Luís-MA joined the most restrictive measures on Tuesday (5), while Belém-PA entered the most rigid phase of its quarantine today.

In Pará, Governor Hélder Barbalho (MDB) says that he cannot adopt the blockade throughout the state due to its dimensions. The decree he signed is valid for Belém and nine other cities in the capital region. The document, in addition, generated controversy this week for considering the service of domestic employees as an “essential activity”, although with restrictions.

In Maranhão, Governor Flávio Dino (PCdoB) treats the blockade as a “prophylactic measure” and warns that the restrictions may even increase depending on the evolution of the covid-19 in the state. Today, the government has installed sinks and taps in places of great circulation in São Luís, in an attempt to contain the spread of the disease.
