The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), announced today that the region of Baixo Amazonas and Calha Norte will go into lockdown for the identification of two cases of the Manaus variant of the new coronavirus in the city of Santarém (PA). The measure will be valid from midnight on Monday (1st).

The region borders the Amazon, which faced a collapse in the health system due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the last week. A variant, which was first identified in Manaus and became prevalent in the state of Amazonas, is said to be responsible for the explosion of the disease due to increased potential for transmissibility.

“Guys, we are changing the flag of the Baixo Amazonas and Calha Norte regions to black, which means a blockade only for that region,” wrote Helder Barbalho, who also recorded a video explaining the measure.

“The presence of the new coronavirus strain has been identified in this region, in addition to this, the increased demand for clinical beds and ICUs for patients with covid brings us serious concerns about the ability of the system to serve everyone. For this reason, we will be changing the flag for black, closure. This is necessary to save the lives of our population and prevent the proliferation of the virus and, consequently, the problem worsens, which can lead to the death of many people in Pará, ”he said.

Yesterday, Helder Barbalho had already confirmed two cases of infections by the Amazon variant of the state coronavirus. The lineage was identified in a 58-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both in the city of Santarém.

“Guys, I regret to inform you that two cases of the new strain have been confirmed, here in Pará. The confirmation was made by the Evandro Chagas Institute. The variant that circulates in Amazonas was identified in: a 58-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, in the municipality of Santarém. ”, Helder Barbalho published on his profile on social networks.

What is the black flag

The closure is foreseen in Pará’s combat plan for the new coronavirus pandemic as the most restrictive phase within a system by flag color.

The black flag (closure), according to state regulations, is decreed when there is “acute contamination, with hospital collapse and uncontrolled progression of the disease.”

“The municipalities of the region must implement closures in their territories, with the suspension of all non-essential activities and the maximum restriction on the movement of people,” says the plan.

The state has yet to come up with the specific rules.

Pará registers 40 deaths in 24 hours

The Department of Health of the State of Pará reported that today 40 new deaths were registered. Of those 40, 11 were recorded today and occurred in the last seven days. The other 29 deaths correspond to underreporting on other days.

The state confirmed 1,519 new cases, accumulating a total of 328,800 cases of covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. Pará has registered 7,618 deaths caused by covid-19 so far.

Across Brazil, more than 1,000 coronavirus deaths were recorded for the fourth consecutive day. According to the figures of the survey carried out by the consortium of press vehicles of which UOL is a part, from yesterday to today 1,099 new deaths were computed, which brings the total of deaths to 222,775 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours, the country has presented 58,691 new cases of covid-19. In total, 9,119,477 of Brazilians have already been infected by the virus.

The country today surpassed the mark of 1.8 million vaccinated against the disease. In total, 1,874,078 people have been immunized so far, according to data provided by the health departments of 25 states and the Federal District; only Rondônia has not provided data on vaccination.

The Brazilian variant is already present in eight countries

The WHO (World Health Organization) reported last Wednesday that the variant of the coronavirus identified in Manaus has already reached eight countries: Brazil, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, South Korea and Ireland.

In the document, the WHO expressed concern about the evolution of the spread of the variant, due to its risk of greater transmissibility and reinfection. Further studies are still needed to better understand the impact of the variant, especially its resistance to covid-19 vaccines.
