The director of emergencies of the World Health Organization (WHO), Michael Ryan, said on Monday (12) that the stabilization of Covid-19 in Brazil is important, but many people are still infected in the country and current numbers are not synonymous with safety.

According to Ryan, the decline in the main indicators does not mean that they cannot rise again.

In the last week, Brazil passed 150 thousand deaths from coronavirus and 5 million cases. Despite the high numbers, the moving average of deaths from Covid-19 was below 600 for the first time since May, according to the media consortium.

The head of emergencies also recalled that Brazil is a very large country and explained that National registries may be falling, but in certain areas pollution may be increasing.

“As we have seen in recent months, the reduction in the number of cases does not mean that the outbreak will not return. We must remain vigilant. Brazil is a big country and we must pay attention to the places where the numbers keep increasing ”- Michael Ryan.

The WHO technical leader, Maria van Kerkhove, stressed that countries must continue with measures against the new coronavirus. “We are seeing the resurgence of Covid-19 in European countries, for example.”

The world surpassed a record number of daily coronavirus cases in October. According to the WHO, the increase in numbers is due to a new outbreak in Europe.

Herd immunity is not an option

The Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that “It is not an option“Let the new coronavirus circulate freely so that the population acquires herd immunity, as some have suggested.

“Herd immunity is a concept used for vaccination, in which a population can protect itself from a particular virus if a vaccination limit is reached” – Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

He recalled that never in the history of public health has this herd immunity been used as a strategy to respond to a disease outbreak, much less a pandemic. “This is scientifically and ethically problematic,” he said.

The new coronavirus pandemic has caused more than a million deaths worldwide since the WHO China office recorded the onset of the disease in late December.
