Joe Biden, elected president of the United States for the next four years, will face a number of challenges. The Democrat defeated Donald Trump in the controversial 2020 election, according to an initial projection by the Associated Press news agency. The Republican is the first American president not to re-elect himself since 1992.
The biggest challenge will be the new coronavirus pandemic, which has regained strength in recent weeks. The United States is the country with the most deaths and cases of Covid, concentrating around 20% of all deaths and infected in the world. And it registered more than 100,000 cases in 24 hours on Wednesday (4).
But Biden will also have challenges in the economy, in foreign policy, and probably on the Supreme Court. (see below).

Biden promises a completely different strategy than the one adopted by Trump to combat the pandemic, beginning to ensure that public health decisions are backed by science and informed by professionals in the field.
Unlike the Republican government, which said the United States was not going to control the pandemic, but rather learn to live with Covid, as with the flu, the Democrat promises to control it.
To that end, their goal is to provide free, reliable, regular testing to all Americans to enforce mask wear nationwide and protect older and at-risk people.
Biden also says that he will resume the relationship with the WHO (World Health Organization). In July this year, Trump announced to Congress and the United Nations that he had begun the process of formally withdrawing the country from the WHO. In the statement at the time, the exit would go into effect on July 6, 2021.
In the economy, to face the impacts of the pandemic, the Democrat promises a fiscal package of another 3 trillion dollars and accelerate an investment plan in infrastructure planned for the next 10 years.
But it will have to deal with the country registering hundreds of thousands of unemployment insurance claims per week and an unemployment rate that is still more than double that recorded before the spread of the coronavirus.
Biden also promises to reverse some of Trump’s corporate tax cuts and carry out tax reform to get the rich to pay more taxes.
Foreign policy and trade war
The president-elect will also have to deal with the trade war that his predecessor started against China.
The democrat must maintain the confrontation against the Asian giant, but within institutions such as the WTO (World Trade Organization), marking an important difference in Trump’s position.
Despite this, Biden must continue the US attempt to prevent Huawei from implementing 5G technology in various countries around the world.
The United Kingdom, Japan and Australia have already excluded the Chinese company from the dispute, and the next great battlefield between the United States and China will be Brazil.
Brazil, which is expected to hold one of the world’s largest 5G auctions in 2021, has China and the United States as its two main trading partners.
Under Trump, the United States promised $ 1 billion in credit to finance projects in Brazil, including 5G, but a decision against China could bring damage to the country.
The position of Bolsonaro, who was a great ally of Trump, may change along with the alternation of power. The Brazilian president has already said that he will be the one to decide on the Huawei issue.
Brazil may also be under pressure from the United States due to burning and deforestation in the Amazon. Biden cited the logging of the rainforest in the presidential debate against Trump and was quickly countered by the Brazilian president.
Unlike Trump, Biden has a clear environmental agenda, he must put the United States back in the Paris Agreement and take action against global warming.
On the home front, the Democrat will have to deal with the racial conflicts and protests that have raged in the United States since the assassination of George Floyd. Black, was killed by a white police officer after being immobilized and having been pressed on the neck by the officer’s knee for nine minutes.
Trump’s response to the Black Lives Matter movement was to criticize and criminalize the demonstrations and defend the discourse of law and order.
Biden chose Black Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate and must take a position completely opposite to that of the current president.
With that, white supremacist movements must be challenged. During Trump’s term, the Republican approached the groups with suspicion and avoided condemning them more than once.
Conservative Supreme Court
To fulfill most of his promises, Biden must have a great ally: a Democratic-majority Congress. The superiority must ensure that they can approve your proposals early in your term.
Biden, however, must struggle with another power: the judiciary.
Trump managed to appoint three justices to the Supreme Court (Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett) and built a solid conservative majority on the court.
With 6 conservative judges and only 3 progressives, the Court will soon be able to decide on issues such as the future of Obamacare, the Trump administration’s immigration policies, the prohibition of discrimination against same-sex couples and even abortion.
That is why there are already Democrats who advocate expanding the number of Supreme Court justices. Under pressure from the party, Biden promised that, if elected, he would form a bipartisan commission to study the matter.
