The dispute between the yellow and red-black sides can affect the entire championship
The rivalry between Palmeiras and Flamengo has grown in recent years, in which the Alviverdes and the Negro-rubro have positioned themselves as the main powers of Brazilian football and the biggest candidates for great titles. But it is off the field, in this Brasileirão 2020 celebrated in the scenario of the Covid-19 pandemic, that the animosity between the sides arose from the mere provocation to win legal contours that may even paralyze the entire dispute of the Brazilian Championship.

This Saturday (26), a decision of the Rio de Janeiro Regional Labor Court (TRT-RJ) caused the game between Palmeiras and Flamengo, scheduled for this Sunday (27), to be suspended due to the explosion of Covid cases – 19 between players, coaches and coaching staff of the Rio team. The animated side has been shown, since the discussion began, contrary to the postponement and, in this case, has the support of CBF.
Why does CBF insist on playing the game?
The main Brazilian soccer entity guarantees that the protocol carried out with the aim of making the Brasileirão dispute viable is safe and, according to an article published by UOL, it guarantees that Flamengo neglected this same protocol before having players and other people infected by the new coronavirus . . That is why CBF insists on the confrontation on the agreed date and promises to fight until the end for that.
Despite the discussion about whether or not soccer should have returned amid the greatest health crisis of our lives, CBF has some supporting arguments on its side. In the first round of the Brazilian Championship, the duel between Goiás and São Paulo was suspended at the last minute after 10 players from the Esmeralda team were diagnosed with the coronavirus. The entity, however, believed that the contamination would gradually decrease in the next rounds and, in fact, it happened.
In his column written for Folha de São Paulo, journalist Paulo Vinícius Coelho, PVC, recalls this situation that involved Goiás x São Paulo and mentions that until weeks ago the discussions about athletes diagnosed with Covid-19 were even rarer than the Usual reviews of our soccer, which team is better, which is worse and which coach is closer to increasing the long list of layoffs. In other words: in the midst of the new normal, there was even a climate of normality towards the show.
The cases of infected people in the Brasileirão decreased, but then the Libertadores games and trips around the continent came to bring back, with a gigantic force, the contamination in athletes, trainers and coaches. Flamengo, who visibly relaxed in the middle of the protocol – which brings a large number of leaders to Ecuador, in addition to the photos that showed the players crowded without due attention – became the sports epicenter of Covid-19 contamination . And then the club that most insisted on the return of football during the pandemic began to do everything possible to postpone the match against Palmeiras, since it could not count on most of its main players.

To reverse the decision to suspend the match, the CBF, still in accordance with the aforementioned UOL article, gave TRT-RJ a report prepared by its Special Medical Commission that shows how Flamengo disregarded the health protocol during his trip to Ecuador. – where he faced Independiente Del Valle and Barcelona de Guayaquil. The controversial photo of the agglomerated red and black soccer players, which ended up resulting in the dismissal of the person who published the image (although hours before the Flemish president, Rodolfo Landim, said that he was only “holding his breath” before taking pictures without masks). has attached to this document.
Can Brasileirão stop? Flamengo disqualified?
If it is determined that the protocol determined for the Brazilian Championship will not be followed, it is necessary to stop the competition.

All this situation ends up creating a huge climate of uncertainty. Not only about the realization of this Palmeiras x Flamengo, but in relation to the entire Brazilian Championship. Also on Saturday (26), President Álvaro, Mauricio Galiotte, defended the paralysis of the event if the predetermined protocol is not followed. That is to say: if the match against Rubro-Negro does not happen this Sunday (27).
At the end of the day, if the duel does not take place this Sunday it is also because the Rio de Janeiro club, defended by CBF, did not respect this same protocol that supported the return of football, which was previously defended by Flamengo himself.
Even the possibility of Flamengo remaining in the Brasileirão came to be minimally questioned, since article 231 of the Code of Sports Justice of Brazil has a clause that still raises the possibility of excluding Flamengo from the Brazilian Championship. According to the newspaper O Globo, this article is part of the discussion on actions in the Common Justice before all the possibilities in the Sports Justice are exhausted, with the eventual beneficiary club (in this case, Flamengo) running the risk of being eliminated from the competition. . However, as it was not Clube da Gávea, but a union, that ended up activating the TRT-RJ, exclusion should not occur.
The article says the following: Art. 231. To advocate, before the exhaustion of all instances of Sports Justice, in matters relating to discipline and competences before the Judicial Power, or to benefit from measures obtained by the same means by a third party.
PENALTY: exclusion from the championship or tournament in dispute and a fine of R $ 100.00 (one hundred reais)
to R $ 100,000.00 (one hundred thousand reais). (NR) “.
In the midst of all this discussion, each side only thinks about not losing. Coherence crumbles amid utter disunity and a general lack of organization to address the issue of health first before considering any possibility of getting the ball rolling. Sport, which should be a positive example, has been a negative example in the way it deals with the pandemic in Brazil.
The realization or not of this Palmeiras x Flamengo goes far beyond the controversy between the two great forces of national football today: it even leaves open the future of the tournament.
