Palmeiras secured their qualification in the final of the Copa do Brasil by defeating América-MG 2-0 today at the Independência stadium. Luiz Adriano and Rony scored the goals for Verdão, seeking the fourth championship of the tournament. Grêmio will be the rival in the decision, after eliminating São Paulo in the other semifinal.
With the 1-1 draw at Allianz Parque, either team would advance with a simple win. Coelho, although playing at home, had a lot of difficulty pressing and ended up not resisting when Palmeiras managed to improve their performance in the final stage.
Abel Ferreira’s team is still looking for another final this season, the Copa Libertadores. Starting next Tuesday (5), Verdão will face River Plate (ARG), in the semi-main continental competition.
THE BEST: LUIZ ADRIANO RESOLVES
It was not the best performance from jersey 10, which spent much of the month recovering from a left thigh injury. Although with little mobility, the forward opted for the only clear opportunity he had, after Ron’s pass. Good dominance and weak finish, but he needs to put Verdão ahead. The problem was that he had to walk away with sore muscles in the second half. It could be a problem again.
THE WORST: VEIGA HAS TURNED OFF THE GAME
Top scorer of Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras, Raphael Veiga has not yet managed to return to the same level he had before hiring Covid-19. Unable to articulate Verdão as usual, he ended up being replaced by Lucas Lima in the second half.
RON IMPROVES AND DECIDES – AGAIN!
The number 11 jersey had a very bad first half, failing most of the attempts it tried, but showed its star again. It was Rony who started the play of Luiz Adriano’s goal, with the pass to finish off the 10 shirt, and then took advantage of the rebound to head for the second from Verdão.
AMERICA-MG PERFORMANCE
América-MG held the tie without goals until much of the second half, but much more because of Palmeiras’ apathy than because of a good performance. Lisca’s team did very little in the first half and after the break they even tried to start more aggressively, and Weverton had no difficulties in Coelho’s main finishes. The offensive team lacked offensive breath to upset Verdão,
YIELD OF PALM TREES
After much talk about physical exhaustion, Palmeiras started the game more closely than in the first leg, trying to steal the ball already in the attack field, but sinned due to a lack of creativity. The condition changed with the arrival of Patrick de Paula, Gustavo Scarpa and Lucas Lima, who made Verdão work more with the ball, especially on the left side. It wasn’t brilliant, but Abel Ferreira’s team secured their place in the final.
EXIT CHRONOLOGY
The first half was widely held by Palmeiras (always close to 60%), but with very few occasions. The only shot of any of the goals came in the 45th minute, in a weak shot from Willian, easily defended by Matheus Cavichioli, goalkeeper of América-MG.
In the second half, Coelho looked like he was going to be more dangerous, only he was punished in a counterattack started by Weverton and finished off by Luiz Adriano, who opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Ron, in front, secured the Palmeirense classification, at 39.
VERDÃO REACHES GOAL 100
In addition to bringing peace to Palmeiras, Luiz Adriano’s goal was the team’s 100th goal of the season. Of these, 17 were made by shirt 10, hired last year.
