Qualified after the 3 x 0 victory over Libertad-PAR this Tuesday (15), at Allianz Parque, Palmeiras reaches the semifinal with the 2nd best campaign in the history of Libertadores.
Since 1988, when the tournament began to have this system of dispute with group stage, round of 16 and quarter-finals, the best campaign was that of América-MEX in 2002, with 9 wins, 1 draw and no losses (93, 3% utilization). The undefeated Palmeiras 2020 arrives with 8 wins and 2 draws (86.7% usage), matching the performance of Santos in 2007 and River Plate in 1998.
With 29 goals scored in 10 games, Palmeiras has so far registered the best attack by a team that advanced from the Libertadores quarter-finals since 1998, surpassing, by far, the record of 25 goals of Corinthians (2000), Santos (2003) and Atlético-MG (2013).
And with just 4 goals conceded, Palmeiras still has the fourth best defense since 1988 by a club that reached the semi-finals. Only Corinthians (2012) and São Paulo (2010), who scored 2 goals, and Grêmio (2009), with 3 goals conceded, scored fewer goals than current Palmeiras. It should be remembered that in 2018 alviverde also reached the semifinal with only 4 goals conceded.
Playing at home at Allianz Parque, Palmeiras has been overwhelming so far, with 5 wins in 5 games, 21 goals scored (4.2 per game) and only 1 goal conceded (0.2 per game).
For not having faced former champions and teams considered weak so far, Palmeiras’ campaign was even questioned after the victory over Libertad. But Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira disagreed at the press conference: “I do not agree with this that our rivals were weaker. If they arrived it is because they have quality. I hate when rivals go down, we have to respect everyone 100%” .
