Palmeiras squandered the opportunity to stay one point behind the international leader and drew 2-2 with Sport, today (13th), at Allianz Parque, in a match for the tenth round of the Brazilian Championship. After leaving behind on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Iago Maidana, the team turned with Willian and Zé Rafael, but Lucas Mugni defined the game, marked by the expulsions of Sander and Zé Rafael himself.
The result is bitter for Verdão, who squandered the opportunity to stay with the international leader, even with one game less. The team had the game under control, until shirt 8 received the red card, which was highly contested by the Palmeirenses. With 17 points, Vanderlei Luxemburg’s team is in sixth place, three behind Colorado. Sport, with 11, is 14th.
This weekend, Palmeiras will play the Copa Libertadores: Wednesday (16), visit Bolívar (BOL). The next game for Brasileirão will be on Sunday (20), at 4:00 p.m., against Grêmio. Leão da Ilha will host Fluminense, also on Sunday, at 8:30 p.m.
Zé Rafael scores a great goal, turns red and scolds him
Zé Rafael scored a great goal to turn the score around in favor of Palmeiras, still in the first half at Allianz Parque. One of the team’s highlights in the last two victories, the shirt 8 hit a strong shot from outside the area, near the left corner of the Sport goal. The performance was hampered, however, by the cards. He received the first yellow to end a counterattack by Leão da Ilha, who was already receiving an expulsion; the referee Diego Pombo López, however, only gave yellow. Minutes later, he considered that by placing his hand on the opponent’s chest, the midfielder deserved the second card and, consequently, the red one.
Sander misses a goal for Palmeiras and is also sent off
Sander had a disastrous performance at Allianz Parque. Although Sport’s penalty kick started, the left-back also missed the pass to goalkeeper Luan Piolli, which generated the equalizer for Palmeiras. At the end of the first half, he still committed a hard foul on Wesley and was sent off by referee Diego Pombo López.
Game timeline
Palmeiras had more possession of the ball from the start of the game, but were neglected in Sport’s first well-armed counterattack. Wesley ended up penalizing Patric, and Iago Maidana opened the scoring early in the game.
Sander’s passing error, however, sent Willian ahead of the León goalkeeper to touch his exit and tie. Zé Rafael, with the beautiful goal before the break, left Palmeiras ahead and in a comfortable situation, even more so when he was left with one more player.
Willian had another chance to score the third at the start of the final leg in a match so far under the control of the home team. The expulsion of Zé Rafael gave confidence to Sport, which again reached the equalizer in a good play by Rogério and submission by Lucas Mugni.
The Palmeiras went to abafa in the final part of the game and had chances to score the third. Willian, already in extra time, took goalkeeper Luan Piolli out of the play, but tried the pass. It was the last big chance in the 2-2 draw at Allianz Parque.
