The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (DEM), ruled this Saturday the 9th that the city will begin vaccination against covid-19 before the national immunization campaign, which will be carried out by the Ministry of Health. On January 8, Paes even announced that there was a commitment deadline by the city for the purchase of 3.2 million doses of the Coronavac vaccine, produced by the Butantan Institute in partnership with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac. However, after a meeting yesterday between the municipal secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz, and Butantan, it was determined that the purchase would not be made.
“The information that (Soranz) gave me is that a contract was signed with the federal government on the issue of almost 50 million doses, and that vaccination will begin simultaneously throughout Brazil, starting with the National Immunization Plan. What is fantastic news. This is the news that all Brazilians have always expected, that we would not have cities disputing the acquisition of this or that vaccine, ”said Paes.
“Now we are waiting for the Ministry of Health to announce the date of the National Immunization Plan, imagining that this must happen, according to the information I have, at least until the last week of January,” the mayor told reporters. .
This Saturday, Eduardo Paes inaugurated the first of ten Memorials of the Youth Fight against Covid-19, in Cidade de Deus. On the occasion, a conversation circle between the young leaders of the favela and representatives of the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) addressed the need to strengthen the permanence of actions to combat and confront the pandemic. Until January 15, memorials will be inaugurated in the communities of Maré, Vila Kennedy, Jacarezinho, Alemão, Rocinha, Providência, Bankers and in Santa Cruz.
