The Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry (MPRJ) yesterday arrested Daniel Haddad Bittencourt Fernandes Leal, considered one of the “oranges” of the militiaman Adriano da Nóbrega. It was the objective of Operation Gargoyle, which the MPRJ carried out on Monday (22) against Captain Adriano’s financial movement of resources.
Nóbrega was from the Police Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) of the Rio de Janeiro PM and was considered the head of a group of hitmen known as the “Crime Office”, which operates in the West Zone of the Rio de Janeiro capital. He was killed in February last year in a confrontation with the Bahia police, where he was hiding.
Daniel was found in Joinville, Santa Catarina. Prosecutors contacted him after identifying a city resident who was related to Daniel’s wife, Carolina Mandin Nicolau, who was also the target of the lawsuit, but without an arrest warrant.
Daniel had already been the object of a search and seizure in February 2020, when R $ 124.6 thousand, belonging to the criminal organization led by Captain Adriano, was seized.
Of the three wanted in Operation Gargoyle, only Prime Minister Rodrigo Bitencourt Fernandes Pereira do Rego had been detained so far. The widow of the former head of the Crime Department, Julia Emilia Mello Lotufo, is also wanted and continues to flee. Five other people were given precautionary arrest measures.
More than 3.5 million transactions
According to the MPRJ, Daniel and other members of the gang acted in the granting of loans to third parties (up to 22%) with exorbitant interest rates with illicit resources from the activities of the gang led by Nóbrega. They used shell companies, such as Cred Tech Negócios Financeiros LTDA, which transferred, from August 1, 2019 to April 28, 2020, R $ 3,624,531.00.
The investigation found that Daniel and another suspect, Jefferson Renato Candido da Conceição (known as Sapo), seized assets from Cred Tech debtors, passing them on to their names. The couple always informed the then wife of Captain Adriano.
The Public Ministry alleges that the crimes committed by the gang were loan and money laundering.
