Hundreds of birds were found dead in a street near Rome’s main train station, this Friday (1), after the arrival of the New Year.

The cause of death of the animals has not been confirmed by the authorities, but organizations say that the “massacre” was caused by fireworks launched by the population at the end of the year festivities.

On Facebook, the International Organization for the Protection of Animals (OIPA) published a photo of the lifeless birds, scattered on the ground, and wrote: “The terrible consequence of fireworks.”

In interviews with the local press, Loredana Diglio, a spokeswoman for the organization, explained that the fires could have caused heart attacks in the animals. Disoriented by noise, they may also have died after hitting each other, on walls or electrical cables.

According to the Euronews television network, the Italian subsidiary of OIPA has called for a ban on the sale of fireworks for personal use, citing the threat to animals.

On the eve of the arrival of 2021, the Italian government imposed a curfew starting at 10 at night, to try to contain the advance of Covid-19 at New Year’s Eve parties.
