Violence that threatens democracy: crimes against political candidates and pre-candidates tripled in just 4 years.
Adriano Magalhães, candidate for the Municipality of Dom Eliseu for the Solidariedade party, was assassinated in the south of Pará, he, two sisters and advisers had just left the rally and were going to have dinner on the banks of BR-010. No one saw where the shot that killed Adriano came from. It was the first time he had participated in an election. A lawyer, he had been a municipal clerk for two years. The family says Adriano had no enemies.
Adriano’s death did not even enter the statistics of the investigation on violence in politics, carried out by the non-governmental organizations Terra de Direitos and Justiça Global.
The study collected data from January 2016 to September 1, 2020. 327 cases of violence against elected politicians, candidates and pre-candidates were mapped, including threats, assaults and crimes. But it is the increase in murders and attacks that scares the most: 125, in 24 states of Brazil. And the violence is on the rise. From 2016 to 2019, the number of crimes of this type has almost tripled. With the start of the electoral campaign, at least 7 other cases of deaths and attacks were registered, after the survey was completed.
