On the day of the protest against the death of the black man, Bolsonaro says that Brazil has more complex problems than racial problems

RIO – The day that Brazil mourned the death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, a black man beaten and fatally suffocated on Thursday night (19) in a Carrefour unit in Porto Alegre (RS) by two security guards whites President Jair Bolsonaro (not a party) took to Twitter to make a series of seven posts in which he defends the idea that the country has more complex issues than racial problems.

“We are far from perfect. We have our problems, problems that are much more complex and that go beyond racial issues. The country’s great evil continues to be moral, political, and economic correctness. Those who deny this fact help perpetuate it.” the president wrote. In none of the messages does Bolsonaro mention the crime in Porto Alegre.

“As a man and as president, I am color blind: we all have the same color. There is no better skin color than others. There are good men and bad men,” added the president.

Throughout the day, the president’s silence on the death of João Alberto was noted. Vice President Hamilton Mourão went so far as to say that there was no racism in the case, since, in his opinion, there is no racism in Brazil.

It was a dissonant voice: among the members of the Três Poderes, the tone was one of condemnation for the violence practiced in Porto Alegre and for the need to combat structural racism in Brazilian society.
