Lewis Hamilton would be a seven-time champion in Turkey if he scores eight points more than his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas. He did much more than that. He won spectacularly after starting sixth and climbing the pack, while the Finn had a poor performance: he ran six times, made a lap at Hamilton and crossed the finish line only 14th, out of the scoring zone. The Mercedes driver himself admitted that he had a “disastrous” career.

– I had the lap in the first corner, I was avoiding one of the Renault cars in motion, so I had a collision in turn 9 of the first lap. The car was not good. I felt the steering wheel lean to the left in a straight line, the car behaved differently, it was sliding. In all the moments (rounds) that I had, it was not as it should be. It was a messy race, a disastrous race. It could be the toughest race I’ve had in Formula 1 by far, Bottas said.

Promises to fight Hamilton
Despite being easily outbid again by Hamilton in a championship, Bottas vowed to fight to defeat the Englishman in his fifth season as a teammate of the seven-time champion in 2021:
– He definitely deserves it. He was better than all of us all year long. He really deserves it and it’s good for him. But I’ll try to get it right next year.
On social media, Bottas again used the term “disastrous” to define his career in Istanbul. Then, in another post, he congratulated Hamilton. Ranked 14th at the Turkish Grand Prix, Bottas is 110 points behind Hamilton in the table with just 78 up for grabs. The Mercedes driver is 27 points ahead of Dutchman Max Verstappen, third in the overall standings.
