Nintendo confirms invasion and data exposure of 160,000 accounts

The incident occurred since early April via Nintendo Network IDs (NNID)

Nintendo confirmed that 160,000 accounts have been illegally accessed on its online service (the “Nintendo Accounts”) since early April. The thefts took place on accounts that had a Nintendo Network ID (NNID) associated with them, using identifications and passwords “obtained other than through our service,” according to the company.

Nintendo Network ID is an older form of access to Nintendo’s online services, used on consoles such as 3DS. With the launch of the Switch, Nintendo migrated to a new system, Nintendo Accounts, but allowed a NNID to be associated with a Nintendo Account to log in. With the invasion, this integration was disabled.

Nintendo warns that accounts with the same password on the Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo account may have been used for online purchases at My Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop. In this case, users should contact the company to request a purchase history analysis and a refund.

Leakage of personal data.

In addition to possible financial loss, affected users also suffered personal data leaks, such as email address, last name, date of birth, and country of origin.

The passwords of all affected users will be reset and they will be notified by email. Nintendo recommends that all users of its online service activate two-factor authentication on their accounts, for added security.
