Ney Franco admits offensive incompetence and Cruzeiro’s difficulty in transferring quality from training to matches | cruise

“It was actually a game of offensive incompetence. When I speak of offensive incompetence, I not only include the attackers of the team, it is the team as a whole ”- Ney Franco.

Cruzeiro had a territorial domain of the game, with 66% possession of the ball, almost always in the Avaí field. But, with the medium closed and the creative pieces in a night of very little inspiration, the team exaggerated in the crossed balls, facilitating the work of the rival high defense, with Rafael and Airton sovereign above. Ney Franco wanted to point out that Cruzeiro tried to break the Santa Catarina blockade in every way.

– Again, it was a game that we had volume, but we created very little. Today we tried to enter the rival area several times, sometimes through the center, which was congested. We were able to spin the ball, but at the crossroads the opposing team won all the balls with their heads. (…) Even though we have possession, we turn the ball and sometimes we miss passes, I think the biggest mistake was not creating scoring opportunities.

The coach also explained that the entries of Régis and Marquinhos Gabriel, at the beginning of the second half, were to try to improve the creation of the team from the inside, since most of the plays happened on the edges, facilitating the defensive work of the defenses avaí. So it was with Thiago replacing Arthur Caíke, trying to push up tables and gain strength to enter the rival area.

– We had runners to play on the wings, we came a lot on the wings and the opposing team was very well placed in this type of cross. So, the substitutions of Régis and Marquinhos Gabriel were just for that. Then I put Thiago inside, along with Moreno, so that we could enter tabulated in the middle. In some moments we succeeded, but we could not finish the goal, although we surrounded the area, we turned from side to side, but we did not have that strength.

Ney Franco was asked about the quality of the training. Has the team succeeded in creating and scoring goals in the play of La Toca? The coach says yes, but admits difficulty in transferring this situation to the games.

– They are succeeding (creating in formation). They are training well. We are managing to create some offensive positioning situations, there have been goals in training. The training has been good and the players have shown technical quality in their work.

What is the criteria for using Cabral and Machado?

– The criterion was, in the first place, training. Then we had the absence of Jean, who played the last two games, the absence of Henrique, and I had three options for the position. In addition to the two athletes who started playing, I also had Jadsom and in this game I chose to use Ariel and Machado.

What happens to this team?

– In some moments, some technical errors. At other times, we are not efficient. I will have to be repetitive, because, once again, it was a game that lacked offensive strength. We attacked, we managed to reach the opposite field, we circulated the ball a lot, we had loopholes to reach the wings, we had too many centers and the opponent was always superior in this play. We try to play in the middle.

– The story of the game, in my opinion, was as follows: a team playing in the opponent’s court, but we couldn’t. (…) I have, as a coach, to create some situations in our team, that we gain this strength, that we make the opposing goalkeeper work harder and that we have this effectiveness in the opportunities we have, to make more goals and increase this index in our team.

What have you been training to improve the breeding?

– This week we trained a lot in possession of the ball in the opposite half, with him behind, with our defensive midfielders, the full-backs too. We made these kinds of moves in training, because we imagined a game like this, with the team behind it and exploring counterattacks. In training, we created some alternatives and you saw what those alternatives were.

– First, we start with two sprinters on the sides, a centralized forward and a midfielder who arrives, which is Maurício. In training, we had a lot of moments where it worked well. Then we train a second half with another forward inside. At first, this was done with Moreno and Caíke inside, with the two open socks and with the arrival of the ruffles. In training it worked, we had a good time, a team with offensive potential was being designed, but in the game we could not transfer the quality we had in training.
