Newspapers avoid saying that the arrested deputy supports Bolsonaro

The arrest of federal deputy Daniel Silveira (PSL) was the main topic of all the news on Brazilian open television this Wednesday (17). The unanimous ratification by the full Supreme Court of Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decision gained considerable space in the news, even on the most openly sympathetic government channels.

A recognized supporter of President Jair Bolsonaro, Silveira was arrested on Tuesday night (16) after recording a video with threats to the STF ministers and an apology for AI-5, the harshest decree imposed by the military dictatorship (1964-85 ) that suspended all constitutional guarantees.

Although they have given much prominence to the news of his arrest, “Jornal da Record”, “SBT Brasil”, “Jornal da Band” and “RedeTV! News” avoided mentioning that Silveira is one of Bolsonar’s shock troops.

This reference was made explicitly, on more than one occasion, by the “Jornal Nacional”. Globo’s newscast was also the one that devoted the most time to news about the prison: 28 minutes. In an official tone, JN showed 11 minutes of transcripts, with images from TV Justiça, of the STF session that endorsed the decision of Alexandre de Moraes.

“Jornal da Record” covered the day’s news for more than 11 minutes, approximately the same time as “SBT Brasil”, while “RedeTV! News” spoke for 7 minutes and “Jornal da Band” for 5 minutes. All reproduced short excerpts from the STF session.

Band and Record expressed opinions on the case, the first in favor and the second against the STF’s decision.

In Band, presenter Eduardo Oinegue considered the opinion of the STF that parliamentary immunity “does not exist to harbor hate speech or to protect those who believe that it can incite society against a power of the republic. Decorum and confuses the speech with the excretory function “.

In Record, commentator Augusto Nunes called Moraes’ investigation “illegal” and said it was difficult to understand why the Supreme Court “acts with such haste and outrage when it feels insulted while contemplating much more serious cases.”
